To me, it looks like they have small halide reflectors like most combos. You can design a small reflector to be better than another small reflector but I dont think you can design a small reflector to be better than a good, larger reflector. I would have a very hard time spending a lot of money on a combo with small halide reflectors. Let's face it, the small reflectors are one of the compromises of putting everything in one housing and many combos are built like that, cheap ones and expensive ones. Obviously SLS knows this so they put larger, better reflectors in the Maristar. I would take a Lumenmax 3 or Lumenarc mini DE over any reflector that I have ever seen in a combo. I know that doesnt answer your question directly. How does the Infinity compare to the Maristar ... I'd bet that the Maristar halide reflectors have better spread, smaller hot spot. Other than feeling that the halide reflectors are probably better in the Maristar and the 4 T5's are an advantage in the Giesemann I have no idea. |

I purchased a 48inch Maristar a month ago after researching those very same fixtures. I am extremely happy with it. I put in 2-250 watt Reeflux bulbs and 2 Giesemann Actinic plus T5. I did not choose the Galaxy or Bluewave ballasts but decided to use 2 Coralvue dimmible electronic ballasts. What swayed me was I was not able to find one complaint about the Maristar fixture online but was able to find many about the other fixtures (not Geisemann). Also, the fixture has separate plugs for each MH as well as T5 to allow me to dawn and dusk the T5's as well as dim one side of the tank for new arrivals if I choose. The Coralvue ballasts feed the 12K reeflux bulbs perfectly and the color and effect is awesome! The Maristar also has built in fans that push out the back of the unit. It is very quiet and extremely well built. For what it will do and for all the years you will use it. I would spend the extra $ to have this unit. And I did!

We have a 24" 250w over our 34g Solana (22x22x22) ... great fixture, good light spread, actively cooled (fan), good finish. We like it.
