-A10 USD worth timer that fails and your fans don't run and your MH toast your reef in 2 hours.
- A simple heater that gets stuck ON or electrocutes your tank and maybe you.
- A powerhead that leaks electricity or worse yet Copper in your tank
-A skimmer that does not do its job well
-Bulbs that are not the correct wave lengh or not enough par...
-Test Kits giving you bad values.

Hek everything in this hobby can cause serious damage. a simple leaking tube connection or anti siphon valve that fails and drains your tank.
I would say the most important thing is good luck when you have that all others can be handled. after that you just need to get the best of the above

Convenience.

If you want long term success, make sure everything is convenient. It's easy to do maintenance, water changes, cleaning, etc. when the tank is new and everything is exciting. It gets a lot harder when you're tired, sick, running late, or just wanna sit on your butt and watch TV. If you make everything convenient, it's a lot more likely to get done... especially a couple of years down the line.

I dont know if I missed this or not but I dont think anyone mentioned Temp control of some sort, being a heater, chiller, home has ac, etc.

A good reef quality RO/DI system. The single largest ingredient in a reef tank is wate rand everything depends on the quality and consistency of that water.

patience is key, all the equipment in the world can not help you if you do not have patience
Knowledge is a close second.
Lots of equipment list here may not be needed.

RO/DI water, lights, and flow. THEN a skimmer. (if not keeping SPS)

I see everyone's point that a skimmer is important, but I do not run with one.

--> i do not keep SPS so I cannot make this claim when referring to specifically keeping SPS <--

If I don't run a skimmer, and have success, then it cannot be more important than other factors.

I believe that a great tank starts with great water. And MOVE that water. and lighting, depending on your corals/coralline desires.

I do not mean to start a protein skimmer/no protein skimmer debate, although I see that i'm tossing a bold claim out there.

\ Protein skimmers are very important, I will heartily acknowledge. But not absolutely necessary, which is the question in this thread.
