One thing that I'd be suspect of is how you're testing. If it's only a couple times a year, I imagine you have a test kit, which I don't feel will ever give a good or reliable reading.

That said, with a well built/insulated home pH will always be on the low side, I've not gotten mine about 8.1 in a number of months (though it's never been an issue).

I guess the always open windows and door in my condo really are helping PH then. Makes sense. I really don't know if the balcony door has ever been shut since the day we moved in...Im pretty sure not even once though.

yes I just use a test kit and who knows it might be wrong but I thank it is pretty close.
My point of this thread it to find out if there is something new people are doing to keep there PH up. my PH runs 7.9-8.0 year round and might height 8.1 a few days out of the year.

If pH is your only concern I would not consider using Kalkwasser.

Downside to using Kalkwasser:
- Possible overdose if your ATO/dosing pump fails.
- Changing Kalkwasser in a reactor is really messy and very caustic.
- In some tanks it can harden the sand like a rock.

Upside to using Kalkwasser:
- Cheap to setup
- Raises pH (Which is good as long as its constant and never overdosed)
- Can maintain Ca and Alk to a lesser degree. (I only experienced .20 ppm gain in Ca when using Kalk)

Some people have great success with Kalkwasser but I experienced all of the disadvantages.

Understood. The biggest concern of a low pH level is that it makes calcification a bit more challenging for corals, but I've not seen a huge issue with growth in my predominately stony tank with pH levels in the same range.

yes this is the biggest reason for wanting my PH to be higher. I thank hard coral grow better with the higher PH.
