I've never been stung by any of my corals before. I too am interested in hearing about if hammer corals sting, because mine has never stung me when I touched it.

Just recently one of my Bubble Tip Anemones stung me. It hurt a bit but not too bad. It's not as bad as a fire ant bite. I do have a high tolerance to pain though.

I have been stung by my blue spotted rabbit fish. Hurt really bad for a few hours. The swelling was insane. I couldn't hold anything in my hand the rest of the day. The pain was gone after about 2-3 hours though. Swelling was gone the next day. Not so bad but very scary.

Ive been sick from zoanthids a few times. Nothing serious, but headaches and and one time some nausea.
The worst pain I have ever felt by far was from my large hot pink yuma in a open cut on my hand. And I was stupid enough to do it a second time just a couple months ago. Both times it felt like someone was repeatedly hitting my hand hard with a big rubber mallet.......for like an hour or two straight. I wont do it a third time. lol Right before I picked the thing up the second time with bare working man hands, I did think about the first time it happened and for some reason didnt think it would happen again. It did. The headaches from the zoanthids I will give a 2. the yuma gets a 8.

if you have cuts on your fingers, and are fragging a bunch of them in the same bucket of water the water can get who knows what in it, and it gets into your cuts and your bloodstream. At least thats how it has always happened to me. Ive never been sick simply moving or gluing them. Its always been when I have been cutting them

My large frogspawn stings the crap out of the underside of my arm when I have to reach over it to get to the back corner of the tank. It never used to sting me when it was smaller, but maybe that's just because it wasn't in a postition where I touched it with an area of sensitive skin. It results in a burning itching lasting for maybe 30 minutes... I dont really remember how long it lasts, as I dont let it happen anymore...

I have handled a hammer many times and never get stung. I have also never had any issues with zoas (knock on wood) even though I know they can be dangerous. No lion but when I have room for a FOWLR tank I will have one.
I think the thing that should be said here and hasn't yet is you should have a set of gloves when working in the tank to prevent this. There have been a couple people on here that have been very ill from just the tank water entering a cut on their hand or arm. Others have developed rashes or infections when fragging. Yes these are extreme cases but wouldn't you rather prevent it from happening in the first place? Take all the precautions you can as you never know what could scrape your hand while in the tank...

Does getting bitten by an angry clown count? I put my fingers near her anemone to feed it and she went nuts all over my arm. While not venomous, it probably hurt worse than any of the mild rashes I've gotten from BTA and hammer corals.

My condy anemone stung me with some lasting results recently.
When I got it and moved it I could tell it was stinging me, but it was nothing more than an odd, almost numbing sensation. As I came into contact with it more, I became more sensitive to the sting. Now, when it brushes my forearm it stings/tingles, almost like being pricked by little needles. It used to do this w/o any lasting effects. Eventually it started leaving red marks for a short time, but the last time it left lines of welts, looking and itching very much like poison ivy. Pain was probably a 3-4, just a nuisance really. Itch was a 6-8 for about a week. I've heard of a few people having bad reactions to frogspawn/hammer/torch stings. They do nothing to me unless I have an open scratch, but I guess then can be pretty nasty to some.

I was stung by a yuma as well, watermelon looking one. I happened to brush past it, trying not to touch an anenome and when I pulled my hand out there was a film on 2 fingers. It felt hot and really red for about 5-6 hrs, not too bad, but I stay away from them now!

Yea and cdness is right, after I bought that condy and heard of people being stung etc, I bought the orange and blue aqua cloves for like 13 bucks somewhere and now I don't even get wet when entering my tank, and I can position anything and everything without getting stung and or my contaminents in the tank! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I've been stung by my big frogspawn before. It's more of an irritant than anything else and usually goes away in about 10 minutes. I have also been gotten by my branching hammer coral, but that's usually when I'm cleaning the tank and have gotten little cuts on my fingers. Again, more of an irritant than anything else, usually lasts a very short period of time, I'll go wash my hands off under cold tap water and it goes away.
I have Rose Bubble Tip Anemones also, in a species-specific tank. When I first got it (one RBTA has turned into 9 RBTA's), I'd get stung pretty good. A nice little rash for a day and then it would go away. But now, I can put my hand directly into the 'nem when I'm feeding and no stings at all. BTW, this has been a really interesting thread to read, good topic!!! Thanks tehauthority!!

I've had my elegance coral touch the edges of my fingers a few times. It felt more "sticky" than anything, exactly like putting your hand into a sea anemone. No pain was felt.
When I was just a kid living in San Diego, we used to stick our hands into anemones out on the jettis ![]()

I've only been stung by one coral and I don't know what it was. I had been taking samples from very deep anemones in the Red Sea and I was slowly working my way back up to shallow water (probably still a bit narced) and I saw some coral that looked like a cross between Blastomussa and elegance. I didn't recognize what it was so I gently nudged it with the back of my finger to see if I could get it to close up and show me some of the skeleton. It lit my finger on FIRE. It burned like crazy for a few hours and swelled up pretty nicely. It itched like poison ivy and stayed red for about 2 weeks. Just the day before I got a whopper of a sting from some sort of planktonic hydroid too that had my whole arm throbbing and going numb. Not a very lucky week for me.
I had a girlfriend once that sat on a jellyfish in the Bahamas. I couldn't stop laughing. We didn't last long after that. ![]()

Capn Hyliner got stung by a longspined urchin and ended up in the hospital with blood poisoning. Use those gloves folks, you never know when you might have a bad reaction!
