It has very limited use for rebuilding reefs in the wild and is not viable at all in closed systems since it produces toxic Cl gas as a byproduct.
I thought the byproduct was hydrogen gas. Also would different types of metals emit different gases?

One of my LFS had a heater break in their 100 gallon coral display tank. Everything was dead except a frogspawn which recovered. Killed all the sps, clams, softies etc. A tank full of skeletons.

It produces both, along with several other nasty potential products including bleach. The metals used for the electrodes don't really matter. As long as you're doing electrolysis in saltwater you will produce them since they come from the salt and the water itself.
