Yeah, Comcast gave him a new cable modem to see if that fixed anything. The part thats weird with it is that the computer is the right speed when you hook it directly into the modem.... The only time things get nutty is when you put the router inline.

Check a few things, if these have already been covered, sorry for the duplicity:

1) Check the speed of the routers ports - make sure it isn't running at 10 Mbps Half Duplex
2) Check QoS, sometimes if you have that enabled on the router and not configured on the PC that will cause latency issues.
3) Make sure the patch cables used are not crossover cables, that's a common mistake made if you are making your own cables.
4) Have you updated the firmware for both the router and the devices?

That's all I have right now, again sorry if any of this has been covered, completed, thought of.

here is one idea replace the ethernet cable. also if it is over 200 ft long it will need a signal repeater. also if he wired every room in the house like I did. and any line is exposed to the elements as in exterior then the cable life is 3 to 5 years.

Well, I am hoping that the two-plus hours I spent on the Linksys tech support forums earlier this morning will finally solve my connection problems.

It appears as though many others have experienced situations that closely resembled the problems that I was having... after reading what many of them posted, I changed some of my router's settings to what they changed theirs to, and it seems to be working just fine right now.

For the past few hours, things seem to be back to normal... the internet flies (like it used to) on my PC, and both Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network are running as smoothly as they did in the past.

I'll be keeping both fingers crossed over here... and I am sooooo happy that I've never had FUBAR situations like this with either one of the fish tanks in my house.

I doubt it was the MAC address cloning that was the issue if you are able to get any internet at all. That was an old issue with Comcast where they would only allow the computer that was initially registered with the ISP to be online. The way to get arount that was to have your router clone the MAC address of that computer so Comcast thought that the computer was hooked directly to the modem. They have since discontinued that practice. Let me know though, I'd be interested what the fix was. I was a Comcast installer for many years back in the day so stupid little things like that interest me.

Well, I can tell you for sure that the WRT160N router that I have hooked up on my network right now had to have the MAC cloning enabled... out of the box, it's set as being disabled. A couple of networking gurus that I know suggest that it should be set to clone the MAC address of my PC, so I did that.

One of the people on the Linksys tech support forums that were experiencing some of the same problems as I was suggested that you change the subnet mask on the router to one of the many numbers that are listed in the drop-down menu once you're logged into the Linksys router... once I did that, and re-booted all of my equipment, it's been right as rain (or snow, in today's case).

Still keeping my fingers crossed, though... but it all seems good so far.
