I think it was a good post and you should lay off. It outlined in bold what an ungrounded outlet may lead to, basically saying hooking up a reef to an ungrounded outlet is silly. Well it is silly.

Wow, I've been away for two days and my post got so many good replies it started a second page. Thanks for the information. My experience with the GFI outlets are that they are tempermental and trip easy around water. I was thinking an aquarium setup would not be ideal but now I'll have the electrician put one in when he comes to finish out my Hurricane repair. Thanks again for all the posts and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

Happy New Year to you.

I like to err on the side of safety's sake. Albeit that a GFCI trips; it is better than one taking a trip to the promised land, at least before their time is up.

Except in my case, the false alarms always, I mean ALWAYS occur when I am away for the weekend, and I come home to find 3 or 4 dead fish in a dark tank.

That being said, once I came home to a dark tank (with dead fish, of course), and a power strip with black, fire scorches on it. I don't know if it was the strip, the GFCI, or the AFCI or whatever you call it, but something did its job.

HERE IS A TIP THAT WILL HELP YOU WITH A GFCI FROM BEING A PROBLEM . PIG TAIL BOTH LINE AND LOAD SIDE TOGETHER SO THERE IS JUST 2 WIRES ONE HOT WIRE BLACK AND ONE NEUTRAL WIRE WHITE HOOK THEM UP TO THE LINE SIDE GFCI THIS WAY YOU WILL ONLY BE PROTECTING THE OUTLET THAT IS SERVING THE FISH TANK . THIS WILL AVOID ALOT OF PROBLEMS FOR YOU SINCE THIS WILL NOT BE GROUND FALT PROTECTING OUTLETS DOWN THE LINE, I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU

JUST TELL YOUR ELECTRICIAN WHAT I TOLD YOU.THAT YOU ONLY WANT TO PROTECT THE OUTLET THAT IS SERVING THE FISH TANK NOT THE OTHERS DOWN THE LINE . THIS WILL SAVE YOU ALOT OF HEADACHES .

Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely tell him about protecting just that outlet. I'm excited about it because the spot is perfect for a 6' long tank and I was going to be sad if I had to scale back to a 5' long one to fit it elsewhere. I subscribe to the theory that less gallons at six feet is better than more gallons at 5.
