Has anybody replaced the fans in the BioCube 29 hood? Was wondering if a different configuratin or actual different fan would make any difference in the cooling of the system.

The NC's light upgrade kit has better fans that are supposed to lower the temp 2 degrees more than the stock fans.

My first BC and LR plus sand all came from a guy who was getting out of it, he had really let the tank go, everything was covered in algae and all the fish had pretty much died off, other than one super strong clown... But rather than cycling the tank and starting from scratch I did move about half the water with the tank, it has made a pretty good recovery over the past year, I have done a lot of upgrading and added more LR, so I have no clue where the hitchhikers came from.

My second BC I also bought from a local reefer, but I am starting it all over from scratch, it is in the middle of its cycle right now, its going to be kept pretty much stock, other than a skimmer and lighting upgrade.

And my third BC is in the mail, it is brand new, don't know what I am going to do with it yet, the price was just too good to pass up, I just hope it makes it in one piece!!

I would go with the bigger tank, but the home I am renting right now is a mobile home, I kind of looked under it and I just really don't like the floor joists, and the floor boards only look to be 1/2 untreated ply. So I will stick with my BC's for now...

Anyone ever do any modification to the inner lining of the display in a bc? i'm talking about the rubbery stuff they line the tank with. on mine it peels off in places and along the back wall a portion has come loose so it sways with the current. i was thinking of maybe stripping it all out and / or going over this with black silicone...??? not really sure how this works. alternatively i was thinking of supergluing the loose portion back against the wall. thoughts?

Mine also had the black rubber lining come loose, I used a razor to trim away the loose pieces and called it a day... Well I had to call oceanic a couple days ago to complain about fans and ballast on my other tank, and while on the phone with the warranty guy I asked him about the rubber lining he said if too much comes off the back wall will separate, and with that he also informed me he was shipping me a brand new tank!!

So just some food for thought if the tank is still newer...

Thanks for the info...I wonder if they sell the fans separate...not necessarily interested in upgrading the lighting (since I'm upgrading to a 75 over the next 4-6 months) but I would like to have fans that actually keep the heat out...I got a new pair from BC warranty service and they are the same old sucky ones that come originally with the unit.

I would just go to best buy and get a couple PC cooling fans, they require little modding and you can even get the ones with built in speed controllers and a built in blue LED, not sure what type of effect that would have since I have never tried it.......... hmmmm, project time!!

So, I recently saw that Oceanic has put out a UV sterilizer to be used with the 14 or 29g. Anyone used one yet?

jb61264, I went to a local Comp. store and took the old fans in and they had the same kind I bought them for a friend the ran about $17. You just need to cut the connector from the old fans. I just tried something last night. I get a big computer fan and opened the top. Put on top just to see if it would cool the water. It cooled it two degrees in 30m. Wow that was fast then I just shut it off. I will send you a pic. when I have time. I will create a better mount when I have time.

Thanks for the info...I am trying something of an experiment right now with the new fans that Oceanic sent me. In their configuration, they have one fan pushing and one fan pulling air into the light area...I am trying it with both fans pulling air into the light area. What I've noticed so far is that there is actually a substantial amount of warm air coming out of the vents. I figure with both fans pulling air into the light area that it will escape somehow...with the two fans, hopefully it keeps the lights cooler. My water temperature hasn't creeped up during the day like it had before, but partially I think that is because it has just been cooler outside and my apartment hasn't been as warm...I will report back when I get a couple warmer days to see if the water temperature stays down.

AH Supply also sells 36w bulbs. They are cheap, and I've had one explode and one break when I tried to VERY GENTLY plug it in. They replaced that one for free, though. Very good customer service. I used their retro kits on my former planted fw tank. I replaced some of their bulbs with Coralife, and I like the Coralife better. (might have been the 55w and not the 36w, so don't quote me on Coralife having 36w bulbs..just speaking of the quality difference).

The bulbs in my 29 BioCube are Coralife (haven't had my BioCube long enough to have to change them out yet)...isn't that the bulb that everybody else's BioCube comes standard with?

As far as I know it is, that's what all three of mine came with!!

Has anyone tried to trim or cut out the inner fins of the fan intake and exhaust slats (It looks similar to a Z but strait) I was thinking of dremeling out the inner ones to make the air flow more unobstructed. I would guess that it was made that way to keep junk from falling in. I have the additional pc bulb and fan upgrade installed from nano tuners and I am still having some heat issues.

What size pumps are you using in the BC14? Looking to add a little more water flow, but don't want to buy another power head. Would prefer to keep it simple with the single outflow tube.

I like the maxi jet 900 I put in mine you can fit a 1200 but people say that you run into heat and power issues
