my plan is kinda a modified version of the acrylic top + the bird netting alum frame tops.....
take a piece of 1/4" acrylic the size of the indentation in the trim where a glass lid would normally drop in. cut the center out leaving a picture frame-ish piece. drill 1/16" holes 1/4" from the inside edge all the way around 1/4" apart (or closer if you prefer). then take UV resistant fishing line to "lace" the holes in an over/under side to side pattern like a tennis racket the main reason i like this way vs. the alum frame & bird netting is i plan to do my returns over the top, so it is easier to make cutouts in the acrylic frame to accomodate these & lace around these openings.....much harder to do that w/ the alum frame
