Frist we did the window. We had to take off a bunch of siding and cut through the Sheer-Panel. At that point we realized that there must have been a window there a long time ago because there was already a header in there. That saved us some time which was nice because another issue came up... will get to that soon enough though.
The new window next to the newly finished fireplace (still needs grout and the mantle).

As we were goiing in for the 2nd hole... the one where the tank will be located, we made a discovery.
We thought that our house only had regular siding with some sheer-panel under it. Well we went to cut through the sheer-panel on this side and there seemed to be something much harder underneath. Huh? Turns out that some previous owner thought that siding was better looking than stucco, so they nailed some plywood on top of the stucco and then nailed the siding onto that. So our house walls go like this from outside to inside. Siding, paper barrier, plywood, stucco, chickenwire (lathe), more paper, studs, insulation and THEN the inside drywall. That added a bit of time onto the project... Which made up for the header that was already in there on the other side.

After we cut through and installed the header for the tank, I put up some temporary studs and then reinstalled the siding so that it looks like we were never even in there. This gives me some time to do other steps in the process without the wife getting on my case about the giant hole in the wall.
Speaking of these other projects.... next up is the Foam Rock WAll. I have 7 cans of Touch n Foam on the way and some nice large rocks to work with. I want to do sort of a plateau/shelf look with Pukani rock in the base.

And maybe a little extra earthquake protection as well.

MAX was a marine/coral event that was held at the OC fairgrounds a few weeks ago. It only comes around once a year. There is also CFM (Coral Farmers Market) and Reef-a-palooza.
The booth I got them from at MAX was the one for Age of Aquariums in longbeach. They can probably get you what you want, but probably not at the same price. They buy a TON of fish just for this event and yours might be more of a one-off. If you can find them for $80 a pair ($40 each) that is probably a pretty good deal.

I'm thinking that I'd like to try some gel filters on the tubes and I'd like some feedback.
This is a graph of the various options I have.... On the X axis is the wavelength in NM, on the y axis is the % tranmission. I'm leaning towards either #60 (since it seems to peak in the 420-480 nm range) or 63.... thoughts? I'll still have some actinic/blue T5's to supplement

I started on the rock structure last night.
I really want this tank to look very natural and take advantage of the 30in height. Something with lots of depth and texture, but still with an open look to it. I want a small sandbed in the center/middle and a thin layer of rock around the perimiter. Here are the raw materials... As you can see I built sort of a jig so that I can lean the structure on its back while I foam it so that my overhangs don't sag. You also may notice the slabs of marble in there. These will be used to add extra weight (I tried this with the original setup of this tank and the rock I made floated.) This will also help give the bottom part of the rock some height so that when I add the sand into the center section it has some "walls" to keep it all in place. This is going to be the right side of the tank.

Touch n Foam for the main part. I also used some regular "Great Stuff" for the base since it will all be covered and protected from UV light.

Yeah, I didn't think that people got that reference to the 6 million dollar man.
It was a tank that busted on me and is being rebuilt from the ground up. Bigger system, better lighting, more flow... LOL, I guess I'm a dork. The clowns are happily swimming around in a 10g in my garage, right next to the frag tank that had an Ich outbreak and is not running w/o fish for about a month to cure.

Thats so unfortunate but I guess it just forced you to go bigger which is a good thing. lol.
Good luck with the build though. I hope it turns out just how you want it to. Ill be keeping an eye on this thread to see how it goes. You had a nice tank before the incident so I can only imagine whats to come.
