I'm in the same boat with you. I'm building an 80 with a 30-40 gln sump. I'm looking for a skimmer that I could also use on a 150. That's the size I want to upgrade to in the future. I would love to only have to buy one skimmer and take it along for the upgrade. But what I haven't had answered yet; is this going to be possible? Is it better to buy a skimmer for only a specific application, or is it OK buy one that is overkill now, but will be perfect for it's next job? I've asked a couple of times in the skimmer q & a, but when I ask, I also ask other questions and have yet to get this one answered.

I don't think you can make that big of a jump (two times the volume). IIRC from reading the skimmer thread is that if you buy one that is too large it just can't produce. It does not get enough gunk to create enough foam to get it into the cup. Maybe a skimmer can handle both, but I don't think so. You would be at one end or the other too much and then to little skimming IMHO. What you might consider is buying the correct size and then adding a second skimmer later. Yes it takes up moe sump space, but it also means you can alternate cleaning and always have one skimming well while the other breaks in. IIRC Mojo recommended this somewhere in his thread.

So, I'm better off buying the SWC 160 cone.

Looks like it. And then buy another when you upgrade. Thanks for the response fishman.

I can't remember what Mojo said to you. I would just repeat. I have a 75 and got the NAC7. It is skimming ell and I am happy. I thought about going with bigger, but for the reasons mentioned above I did not. I don't have plans for a biffe tank, but if and when I will probably just buy a second skimmer. I almost got th NAC6 for $199, but found the 7 for $220 so the price wasn't much different. Accroding to Nuocean

For In-Sump use only.
NAC7 is the newest model of the popular Bubble Magus NAC line - a economical cone shape skimmer with high performance.

Dimensions: 9.2" x 8.5" x 19.6 (L*W*H)

Cone shape, ~7" at base
Pump: ATMAN PH2500 115V 27W

Air intake: 500 LPH

Capability:
Light Bio-load: 150 Gallons
Medium Bio-load: 125 Gallons
Heavy Bio-load: 90 Gallons

Minimum water depth: 6”.
For optimum performance NAC7 should be submerged in 9”-13” of water.

Includes an extra meshwheel.
It may even be too big or my tank, but I plan to upgrade to a 50-55 gallon sump which will maybe put me in range. I also went with the theory that skimmer are usually over rated. I also am currenlt skimming a little wetter than I want, but I have only had it for weeks.

After thinking more about the skimmer, I don't know if the SWC 160 cone would work on a 75 + 40b with a 55g sump. The total amount of water would be about 130g, with 15 fish.

I think two 160s would work for that load. It sounds like you'll have a heavy bioload with 15 fish. Have you looked at the SWC extreme 200 tube skimmer?

The octo looks good. I saw it online and it looks like a tube/cone hybrid. Let us know how it works our for you.
