How's the coverage from front to back with a 30" wide tank?

That's crazy, such an unassuming light fixture. The pods look so narrow but it really lays light down in your aquarium, with a decent width too!

Nice work on the review - Based on the amount of posts popping up about new LED fixtures we're going to see a huge amount of competition and hopefully price drops.

Asian manufacturers are already leading the pack for reasonably priced LED fixtures but they are still very basic in functionality. The Orbitec patent is holding back market innovation is this area, at least in the USA.

I don't think you'll ever see a big price drop for the top-of-the-line (Aqua Illumination, Giesemann, Vertex etc) LED fixtures. The demand is simply not there to drive prices down where these fixtures will be over everyone's tank.

As an example, Giesemann MH fixtures have been around for a long time and prices have always been high.

Cheers!

great par numbers, but with all of that extra space why not have a slot for a t5 on each side of the fixture. Then you would have the best of both worlds.

How did that compare to your old PM?

It's pretty close. The PM at 10" off the water had a little higher numbers at the front and back of the tank but if I lower the Vertex to 3" above the surface it'll exceed the PM numbers...

All the extra space is there to cool the fixture. Keeping the core diode temperature at or below 125C ensures that the LED diode meets manufacturers stated life span (50,000 hours at 3 Watts or 60,000 at 2.5 Watts).

They are dead silent. The fixture uses SilenX fans

can you let us know how well the coverage is on the side?

if the fixture is short by 6" on each end of the tank will the spread cover it mostly? or will it be dark?

I posted side view photos showing spread coverage in the thread already. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...3&postcount=28

Those programming options are not available to me until the wireless V-Stick USB and LightStudio software ship later this summer. The Canadian Vertex distributor tells me that they will be included with all future Illumina shipments once released so you won't be paying extra if you wait.

Cheers!

With all the lights at 100%, what color does the tank have? 12k, 15k, 20k?

Between 13 and 15K I guess with all three at 100%

My settings are White 80% - Blue 100% and Royal Blue 100% so it looks closer to 20K.

Have you seen any reaction from the coral. When I upgraded from a 250w MH to the Solaris i5 I put most of the SPS and LPS in my system into some level of light shock. Started the light up at some thing between 80-100% Burnt some SPS too. Second time around started out at 20% and added %10 a week.

No, I have not observed any bleaching or stress in the week since the light has been up. The Illumina replaced an ATI PowerModule with 8x54 T5's so the PAR numbers are very close. I am running the Illumina at 80% White, 100% Blue and 100% Royal Blue to get a 20K look.

One thing I did observe is that the fish appear to be much happier since there is no abrupt on or off light shock anymore. It's really interesting to watch their daily routines during the sunrise / sunset periods.

I use to have a Solaris I4 on a smaller tank a few years back (gawd awful fixture) and the Illumina's dimming abilities are infinitely more subtle than the Solaris ever was.

Cheers!

hey guys...need your opinion...

i was thinking of an 8ft tank which would need 2 4ft fixtures...

the other option is shrink the tank to 7ft and go with a 6 ft fixture with some shortfall on the sides...

of course there is a substantial savings one vs the other...

whats the thoughts?

I'd go with a 7 foot tank and a 6 foot fixture and aqua-scape accordingly.

OR, just go with a 6 foot tank and 6 foot fixture and re-invest some of the savings in other high-end gear. A 6 foot tank is mighty big IMO.

Cheers!
