update:

So I took about 60 lbs of this rock home and placed it in a rubbermaid tub with a heater and a power head (after i cleaned it in its old home and swished and dunked it and got loads of junk off). I tested phosphates on first day and they were off teh charts then i let it sit in new ASW and yesterday (about a week in) I tested PO4 again and results were much better just after a week. So at that point i cleaned the rock again in the tub with the ASW and swished and dunked and scrubbed with a tooth brush. By the way, this makes quite a mess. Then i placed all rock in another tub with fresh ASW. How long should I do this for? Until I have no PO4 or do the whole "cooking" process for 4-6 weeks? Im down to about 1ppm of phospate from over 5-10ppm. Now remember these rocks are ion less taht 10 gallons of water.

I dont think you should worry about phosphates just yet. I would be testing amonia, nitrates, just to see if there is any die off or if the rock is dying. If you have 60lbs of rock in only 10gal of water I think any test you do will be off the charts. Thats like having 60lbs of rock in a nano, it just wouldnt fit.

this is true rc, but when you are cooking rock there really is no way to get the amount of water you want unless you are using huge buckets which isnt fesible in my situation, lets just say its more like 52lbs in about 15-18 gallons of water. Ammonia and nitrate are being tested for daily, its the phosphate I am worried about. These rocks have been taken from a tank with phosphates through the roof. The rocks are pretty much dead, IE no die off.

Pretty much keep doing what you are doing. Later you could always add a phosphate reactor etc. or even some cheato and a cheap light to help bind or remove the last of it.

Probably hard to say (yeah no one likes that answer) but if you went from 5 - 10 ppm down to 1 ppm in a week you may have a pretty fast cycle. Though it would be a good idea to test at least once before the cleaning bath just so you know you are not getting a false reading.

You may get down to .5 or less and it may continue dropping or plateau. Depending on your system such such as SPS systems then you could deal with it beforehand.

You have what 3 weeks left or so? One way to gauge how long you have left is by looking at the bottom of the bucket. When the rocks are dirty they will shed and it will look like a mat on the bottom. The following week it will be less and so on. Towards the end you may only have a fine dusting on the bottom. If you test then things should have balanced by then.

Again I think you are doing it the right way and you will be pleased in the long run.
