I just saw this post I know its old but I had been thinking about getting. Hawaiin cleaner wrasse but not sure still reading up on them. I was told by one lfs after I bought the regular cleaner wrasse that he would die of starvation but he ate every thing I put in the tank including nori on the clip. He lived for almost 2 yrs until for whatever reason he jumped out of the tank.

I have a blue cleaner wrasse, and he also eats everything. The Hawaiian ate nothing.

If you get one that will take prepped food, you still need to feed it multiple times a day. I feed mine sometimes 4 to 5 times a day until his belly is full. Each time within a couple hours his belly is empty looking again. They can do just fine on prepped foods though. I had mine in qt with only one other wrasse for quite some time while my tanks were fallow. I couldn't put him in my main qt tank because there was a dogface puffer that needed the big tank and the cleaner annoyed him to the point where the dogface lashed out and took a chunk out of him near his tail. He recovered just fine and I've had him for about 6 months now. One of my favorite fish. But a constant food supply is needed. Mine eats everything btw.

For anyone trying to desperately get one started on a captive diet... Try some live pods, they wont hunt them down but they will get them when you drop the pods into the tank. Mine now favors mysis and cyclopeez

I purchased one, not the best idea on my part. Although today the fish is fat and healthy. I feed flakes and mysis shrimp, also every once in a while live brine shrimp.

I've kept non Hawaiian wrasse two different times now and both lasted over 2 years before jumping out of tank and falling in to the overflow. Both ate everything in particular small pellets which was the primary food in my tank. The first couple of weeks they would taste and spit pellets but eventually caught on and flourished after the initial phase.

Question: Is a there a significant difference with the survive rate of Hawaiian vs non Hawaiian cleaner wrasse? I ask because my experience with cleaner wrasse has been 100% success rate and getting them to feed and grow has not been a challenge. Are the Hawaiians harder to get eating or they eat but still mysterious die?

AMEN to the Original Poster! Thank you. I have turned these "parasite only" fish into useless pellet and Mysis nibbling fish. They still seem to be happy picking away at tank mates but if you can keep them alive long enough (for me 2 months) they seem to thrive. It is an awesome site to see them pick a hole in live rock and make a nighttime nest. Good luck to you.

I have a cleaner wrasse. He eats like a pig. He eats nori, blood worm, mises, and pellets.
