Talking Update

UPDATE

-Tank was "erected" (filled with water) and filled with Special Blend/established live rock on 2/22/11

-Cycling for ~3 weeks now

Ammonia - 0 PPM/L
Nitrite - 1 PPM/L
Nitrate - 0 PPM/L

Really hoping by the end of this week it will be done. My birthday is TOMORROW, and NERAC is this Saturday, so hopefully I can buy a few nice new frags for my new system.

So excited... can't wait to fill this little bad boy up with coral & fish.

My TENTATIVE Fish Stock List

-Green Mandarin (when the tank is ready - copepod wise, however I do intend on attempting to train the mandarin to eat prepared foods)

-Longnose Hawkfish (need to do a bit more research first thouogh - I remember reading they can be problematic with ornamental shrimp/inverts sometimes)

-Midas Blenny

-*Flame or Lemonpeel Angel (pending more research)

-*Orange Spotted Filefish (pending more research and if I can find a healthy one)

-*Blue Spotted-Orange Tail Fiji Puffer (same status as the Angel & Filefish - these aren't really easy fish to keep - so I may end up saving my self a headache)
(one of my favorite puffers - and generally puffers are my favorite fish, supposedly sharp-nosed puffers have been successfully kept in reefs)

The fish highlighted in red are what seem to be potentially problematic fish. As much as I want them, they may not make the final cut.

Any suggestions/ideas/comments fish-wise? Any cool ideas? Please let me know, I am all ears.

When I first got into this hobby - I didn't really like tangs.. or SPS for that matter, but I'm slowly getting into it.

I actually really would love the highly sought after Purple Tang (waaaay too much $$$ for me)

However - Its only a 3 Ft tank. I think a tang would easily be stressed catch ick and die in a fairly quick but agonizing death.

I don't want to purchase fish that I will inevitably have to re-home to a bigger tank.

about you issue with limited flow in your reactor, have you tried to use a "Y" fitting to feed your reactor? this might allow for a bit more flow instead of having to use back pressure. i bet if you put a ball valve in front of the "T" fitting and slowed your return it would force more flow into your reactor.

Thats actually what I did. And no difference.

Put a valve right before the T, even closed it all the way to force ALL of the return pumps' pressure to the reactor, and no difference.

I've concluded that its the 3/8" inlet of th reactor that is causing the problem.

All the Biopellet reactors out now have 1/2" inlet & outlet to create "aggressive" tumbling.

Depending on the cost - I might go and buy some clear pvc or cylindrical PVC and create my own reactor.

The BRS Biopellet reactor is $40, but on backorder till 4/1... and I'm starting to get impatient.. haha.

So we'll see.

Thank you for your input though!

i would imagine putting the ball valve after the "T" would create back pressure. putting the ball valve before "T" would just slow your flow into the reactor.

Orange Spotted Filefish........i did this and when they are presented with a choice to either eat what comes natural or what theyve been trained to eat...they choose both..more so the first choice then the last... unless you dont keep any SPS in there then maybe ull be better off.

Tank has been up and running almost 2 months (4/22 will be 2 months).

Will take some pics tonight.

Biopellets have been running for 2.5 weeks now.

Have done only one 10g water change, and another one is definitely overdue.

Waiting on Richie for my ESV salt (I just ran out of IO ugh).. I may just have to go out to Pets Warehouse and pick it up already...

Got a buncha new frags, and transfered practically everything from the 6g.

Pics later on..

UPDATE 4/24/2011

-Did a "big" 20g water change today. (Switched from Instant Ocean to ESV Salt)

-Cleaned glass

-Took some quick shots (haven't had time to really sit down and take shots, the room that the tank is in, is a complete mess.. so was kinda hard to take some decent shots.. but I tried out my new topdown shot box that my sister's boyfriend made for me out of acrylic.

Actinic LEDs

Not seen too often - Red Australomussa

Dosing Update

Created my DIY Alkalinity, Calcium & Magnesium via Randy Holmes Farley Recipe.

4/28/11
Cal - 380ppm
Alk - 7 dKH
Mag - 1050pm

According to the reef calculator...

I need 714ml Cal, 142.8ml Alk, 1411ml Mag.

So I dosed today..

50ml Cal
75ml Alk
50ml Mag

I want to take things slow... and not screw anything up.. I'm new to dosing.

On the bright side of all my "low" numbers.... the only paramater that was low in a good sense was phosphates via Dr. Harry's ultra fancy phosphate checker.

PO4 = .02

Haha.

I'm trying to do this right this time.

My 6g was a bit of a disaster.

And honestly.. right now I'm having some troubles as well.

My LEDs (which are NON-DIMMABLE) are bleaching out and simply making the tissue DISINTEGRATE on a buncha LPS I have.

2 Australomussa frags
1 Neon Green Candy Cane (that I got from Jarrett - )
1 Ricordea Rock (had about 7 ricordeas on... and I'm down to about 3.

Every frag mentioned above was put underneath an overhang I made (in almost COMPLETE SHADE and they are still slowly dying).

I guess my only choice is to hang my LED fixture higher (it's ALREADY 12" off the water).

I'm going to try for maybe 15" or something... maybe it'll help out... really don't have the finances to go and buy dimmable drivers ATM.

Filter sock washed & cleaned today too..

Going to let air dry overnight and put it back on tomorrow..

(waiting on Jarrett's BRS order so I don't have to just wash one filter sock at a time...)

Thanks for the compliment privitor.

However this tank has been broken down, and in her place is a 75g Rimless.

Feel free to check out my new thread --> http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=2113685

Still no water yet, most likely this coming weekend.. (life has been hectic).
