The reef keeper lite and rancho will do the same thing but the rancho is only for temp controll so no timers. The intervils, all cheap wave makers are basicly a timer. They turn off/on your powerheads. So if you have 2 power heads the RKL will turn 1 on for 1 min then off and the other will come on for 1 min then off, so only 1 is on at a time. The pulse due does them in 10 sec on/off times. The cheap way to get that swaying action in the tank. I have 2 karalia mag 6's on mine. The evo's are the fixed version of th karalia 1, 2, 3, 4 they have issues with running backward and making noise. The evo's and magnums don't have these issues on wavemakers. The vortechs'and tunze wavemaker are different that you can control their gph rating and on/off times. The wavemakers all have on/off times they just start differently like RKL being 1 min, due 10sec, ect. these are the minimum times they will run and go longer, the duo's max time is a 6 min cycle. The 2 most common t5 light I see recomenned are tek and ati. If you got the tek and bulbs it is like $50 more and a lot of the cheaper fixtures you here people replace the bulbs right away. There is one other thing that could be added to the list. Noone has mentioned a ato(atuo top off) not something you have to have but makes life easier. It also helps with consistant skimming, so it doesn't skimmer wet on day and nothing the next. This is not something you have to have as long as you top off tank daily.

Thanks for the explanation! So the $50 duo is fine for a wave maker?

I would love to have an auto top off, but where the tank is, I have no way of getting a water line to it and the cabinet will be stuffed with the sump, so no room for it. Sucks, cause I would really like to figure out a way to put one in without it being in view.

You can just set a container next to the tank, or behind it. The water lines and cords that the Tunze osmolator come with are plenty long so would work.

I have a tank on the ground next my display with the RO... not the most nice looking way but it gets the job done. An ATO is one of the most important pieces of equipment in my opinion. Not only stability but also just the constantly filling up the tank with water jugs... gets annoying and tedious.

Which ever one you want to go with is fine. I run mine on 10-20 sec cycle, cause I get the effect I like. Any of the others will be fine also. The one you had on your list I looked at also and just wasn't sure if I wanted to spend that much on a wavemaker. It has some nice features. When I got my pulse duo it was on sale for like $35 I think. Just depends on what you want it to do.

If you use the koralia evolution in wave maker mode, be careful. I have two and even though they have the new fix on the impellor, one always runs backwards after is is switched off. I strictly run them as powerheads now.

Bean, no, my wife and myself, do not want a bunch of stuff hanging around by the tank. Once I get the sump in the cabinet, I will check and see how much space I have and if I have enough, and can get a container in there, I will. Maybe I can get one big enough where I wont have to fill the tank up everyday, maybe it will be big enough that it will take care of it for 3 or 4 days.

Mike / Tinker, thanks for the info. Are the Evolutions not the way to go?

This is the first I have heard anyone saying the evo's don't work on a wavemaker. I have the mag 6's on the wavemaker for a yr now without issue. I thought this was the whole deal why they redesigned them, so you can run them on a wavemaker. I thought that the plate deal was supossed to make it spin the right direction.
