If you're not 100% comfortable, it's time to call in an electrician. I personally can do outlets and run wires, but when it comes to the box I call a professional. Most of the time if you do a lot of the work yourself up to the box, the charge for that quick portion of work is minimal. Just my opinion.

Another thing you can do, is put covers on your sump to minimize evap in the sump. I know it's not as much surface area as the display tank, but any little bit helps. You can run with the tank for a while, and use the fan, but if you notice it getting muggy or water running down the insides of the windows, then it's time for the vent or dehumidifier.

Cheers,
Aaron

You can just get a plug from home depot to put on the end and plug it into a regular outlet.

Green wire goes to the ground prong.

White wire goes to the wider prong (silver screw)

Black wire goes to the narrower prong (brass screw)

Update! It is not the dehumidifier - my neighbor phoned and said they have the same smell in their basement - it's a city problem!! Unbelievable.

Updates to follow...

okay so your smelling sewer gas? Its stinks but it is most definatly a different
smell then burning rubber/electrical. weres your floor drain? were you running the dehumid, into your floor drain? if so thats good because what happens sometimes is the floor drain drys out and some sewer gas can escape, or,, local flooding /high runoff can cause backup in your floor drain.

We had the city sewer people come and an electrician - no problems either way - HOWEVER my neighbor is also experiencing the exact same smell. The culprit?

These 2 guys have been painting at a house across the street for the past 2 days. The smell starts after they arrive and dissipates at night after they leave. Everyone that came here said it smells like paint - the theory?

Those contractors are pouring paint down the drains and its fumes are coming into our homes! It smells like paint thinner! We went over there to see what's going on and they said to F**K off. I believe we have found the problem....
