Skimmer upgrade for 60gal SPS reef

I run a xp1000sss on my 65g and it works great. It doesnt keep its foam all the time so something larger wouldnt be any more helpful, and I feed pretty heavily

LOL ! I have been keeping SPS for almost a decade, Im guessing most who replied prolly have a few years in the hobby period. Yeah I can be a rude dude when people post ignorant replies, also love it when they state their opinion in factual forum.

So its been running for a few days now..... constant foam head unless its feeding time.

Hey Acro... I am a bit confused in trying to decide which skimmer get between the SRO1000 and the 2000 and see you have the 2000 on a 58gal.
My question is do you have to over feed to keep up with the skimmer???? Does it have steady and constant foam???

Thanks in advance so i can decide for my 80 gal. heavy load with 20 sump.

give it a few weeks...its just catching up to your system...let us know if its still producing foam consistantly in a week or two...the reason why the 2000 is skimming on that 29g is because there is a blue hippo tang in there

So its "catching up" to my system that was already "overskimmed" by an ASM G3 (rated by mfg for 250gal) w a sicce mod???NO! considering the tank gets fed daily it will always have crap to pull out.

Did I buy the skimmer because I saw it working on a 29?? NO! i have wanted a cone style skimmer ever since KZ came out with their volcano years ago (prolly before you even got in the hobby)
and I knew it would keep my water low in nutrients mimicking the natural waters found on reefs that void of nutrients.

Do I dose supplements and ammino's to compensate for a massive skimmer ??

Im sure the SRO1000 will be a fine choice for your system, if its going to be all/ mostly SPS and you have some extra scrill in your pocket get the 2000.
but honestly either would be more than sufficient for SPS or mixed.

AND don't listen to the peanut gallery either one will work consistently and efficiently on your system.

Just because you've been reefing for "almost a decade" doesn't mean you are God's gift to the ocean. The truth is he truth. The reason there are ratings on a skimmer is because they are designed for those size aquariums. Keep thinking what you want, and it might work ok with your system, but then again it might not. Ratings can be taken with a grain of salt in most cases but in your case, you bought too much skimmer.

I think you should never ask for an opinion again because it's obvious you do not want to take advice. Good luck!

That's the beauty of Reef keeping. No one way to skin a Cat! Use whatever you feel is right for your tank. There are as many Skimmer choices out there, as there are as opinions that go along with them.
I personally subscribe to using the largest Skimmer you can club. Works for me, but use whatever you like.If you look at past TOTM's most use Skimmers rated way over the actual Tank size. I'm 53 yrs old and have been keeping reef tanks since the George Smit articles (Remember them?) And Reef Fish only systems way before that. And most of the "Berlin" keepers subscribe to using Large oversize skimmers.
Again, i'm not saying this is the only way for everyone, just works for me.
And a quote from SunnyX, most people know him" Get the biggest skimmer you can accommodate. I believe that a protein skimmer is one of the most important parts of a healthy reef system. The skimmer I have on my system is rated for 3-4 times more then my system volume. With a larger simmer you can keep a higher bio load and effectively keep the nutrients down. I guess I should clarify... I'm not saying that the skimmer will absolutely not work, it probably will. My issue with this whole thing is that this guy asked for opinions and when he didn't agree with them, everyone else was an uneducated person that was a "rookie" and they weren't as experienced as him. That was really my own issue with it. I debated the same skimmer on my own tank with a similar water volume and decided on the 1000. I think the 2000 will work just fine, but so would the 1000 so that was my opinion.

I just have issues with people who ask for help and when you try to give it, they just want to argue and thinks everyone else is dumb.

dustin, he didnt ask about the 1000. he had the intention to use a skimmer larger than his recommended volume. thats why hes getting ticked. *right or wrong*

personally, I think using a skimmer rated for 3-4 times your water volume is a good thing. I was always told when I first got in this hobby to buy the biggest you can accomodate\afford. I dont know when that fell by the wayside but I know many people that have skimmers rated for 200g+ on 75g and 90g sps tanks. It just makes sense. Ill tell ya, if it were me and Id buy the 2000 for the extra 100bucks...but Im upgrading to LEDs...I get a cone for my xmas pres.

its funny, most if not all who agreed with me that having a skimmer rated 2-3x the size of your system is an asset have been members for more than 5 years, not saying that the length of your membership to this board = experience and correct knowledge, but in this case it holds true in my opinion. I was getting ticked from all the newbies chiming in and stating their opinion in factual form.

cram the biggest skimmer your sump and wallet can handle when setting up an SPS only system. Pretty sure anyone who has experience with keeping SPS will agree with the previous statement.

I have the eshopps cone on my 60 and it pulls some sludge out and for less than $400 its a great buy.
