I have no problems with mine as of yet and almost a year running.. 0 nitrates and 0.03 phosphates So many post regarding RDSB, DSB and Plenum... I have seen great tanks with them and with out them.. Just keep in mind that everything that work for others might not work for you
My 75gal DT has 5" of sand with crushed croal and a plenum to help with hydrogen sulfide.. The plenum provides a layer of water that maintains a level of dissolved oxygen above zero. Therefore the gravel in Jaubert's system is sandwiched between the highly oxygenated aquarium water circulating above it, and the plenum water, which maintains a low but generally stable level of dissolved oxygen. Being sandwiched between these oxygenated zones tends to prevent the formation of hydrogen sulfide, a common occurrence in deep sand beds without a plenum.
