hey bro I bought the reef octo hob 100F a while back, it's currently breaking in on my 29g. Nice skimmer for under $200. Directions were non existant but you'll have the whole thing put together in under an hour. Solid piece of acrylic, with a few modifications you can make the thing pretty quiet too. Reason I got this one is for the extra chamber where you can put media (have a bag of chemipure elite and foam pads for micro bubble control in mine), with some tweaking you could def hide some equipment from your display tank. To answer your question specifically between 10" to 12" inches of heater will fit into the last chamber, the later if you remove the included black foam pad. You won't be able to fit anything into the first chamber (one with the actual pump) water level doesn't get but an inch or two past the top of the pump. Ordered mine from aqua cave for $160 something, qualified for free shipping, no complaints except the two week wait and the non existant instructions.
-hope this helps |

For the money, I personally believe that reef octupus is a good skimmer. It skims a bit more wet than I would like, but still does a great job. I would look into a hang on back refugium first if you really want to go without a sump but would always encourage everybody to run a sump if possible. I think that aquatraders has a hang on back refugium with a protein skimmer built in (I'm not sure how good it is) but I think a mixture of mechanical and biological filtration is the best bet with a high nutrient system which a fish only tank will be.
