mag 24 in sump
for more than 6 years, perfect performance record keeps a ~260g system volume at approx 3-6* above ambient room temp so my tank runs approx 72-75* 24/7/365 and i don't own a tank heater currently have 2 other mag 24 on 2 other approx equivalent systems with same results just different years use |

From my experience with my mag 5 ~ very reliable, but fairly noisy.

+1 on Mag Drives being a great pump. +1 to it being warm. I ran a mag 7 for 3 years and upgraded to a mag 9.5 when I upgraded my tank size. The mag 9.5 has been in use for almost 3 years as well. With both pumps i've never had any trouble.

I just bought my mag 18 for my 90, I Like it, very quiet, still have to use a heater to heat my tank. The only concern I have is the metal screws in the volute casing, Im worried they will rust over time due to being a sub pump. Should this be siliconed or painted over to prevent rust leaching into the system?

I'll just get the mag then.
As for screws rusting... They are probably stainless. If not gust replace them with stainless.

Reliable, in most cases, run hot, usually require some noise abatement, and do not respond well to head pressure. (static head, dialing them back, they heat up) Also the requirement for 1.5" outlet plumbing, for the larger sizes (9.5 and above,) together make them less than a desirable choice.

I have 2 mag 12's and have found them to be very good pumps, 1 ran for 4 years without an issue and my new one is just as good. I use 1 for transferring water when I do water changes and the other is my return pump. I dont think they are loud as long as they are ran in-sump. A computer mouse pad underneath them helps to quiet down the noise if it has a vibration sitting in the sump.
