From what I can see from this article the material is inert and any chemicals are bound to the material. If I was soaking the eraser in the tank all day, maybe it would break down but just swiping it across the glass every few days would probably be ok, but you make a good point. Can anyone emphatically say that it is safe? According to the article you can eat it and the chemicals are "part of the structure of the material, not running around free".

Further research shows that quite a lot of people are actually using it to clean algae off the glass. If you google it there's a lot of interesting info out there including an article from Snopes.

alot of people also use tap water in their tanks, but I won't. Unless it has been extensively tested on aquariums, I will not risk major harm.

Make sure you use the Original Magic Eraser. The Kitchen and Bath versions do have chemicals in them.
