Just a friendly request, if you could show or diagram how you hooked this up. I am trying to learn more about plumbing. Thank you.

I'm in this club! I have two 34 gal tanks plumbed into a custom made by Jeff. No drilling as both have his overflows. It's been up for for about 4 months. Has worked perfectly since I filled it up and plugged it in!!!
Impeccable craftsmanship, well worth the cost. |

Jeff here from Lifereef. I rarely get on any bulletin board but wanted to check up on this customers progress of his Lifereef system and noticed the comment about needing a website update..... The website is old, very old, over 20 years old. I've had web-savvy customers want to update my site in barter for a filter system but their samples they provided looked like all the other cookie-cutter websites. I don't want the Lifereef website to look like all the other cookie-cutter websites. It needs to be unique, just as the Lifereef products are. I don't want it to be easy to use, that way I only get the sincerely interested hobbyist contacting me, not the guy who is in haste and just "click here to order". Setting up a filter system is not a "click here to order" endeavor. Maybe for supplies like carbon or phosphate stuff, but not filtration equipment and certainly not an entire system. Setting up a filter system requires much foresight, planning, asking the hobbyist what their needs are, their cabinet dimensions, plumbing sizes, etc. Those that "click to order" are taking costly chances, and probably the ones you see on the bulletin boards with problems. And purchasing just a sump or just a protein skimmer require choosing the right sump or skimmer to work with the other. The Lifereef website will remain as it is, unchanged, as are many of the Lifereef products. And with a seven month backlog of filter system orders, the website seems to be doing just fine.

I'm glad I bopped back in, good to see Jeff following up on one of his baby's. Eleven years and 16 post, funny on the phone you fear that you are interrupting his meal he wants to make sure you will be happy.

Well, I finally got a chance to plumb the system over the weekend. It turned out really nice. I have opted to remove the algae scrubber in exchange for a biopellet reactor with warner marine pellets. I want to test this out first before making anymore changes. I am not sure if I even need a fuge but the one Jeff sent me is a piece of art so I kept it with some chaeto and low water flow. I will take pics and post later. I need to clean up wiring still.

Cool.....I'd love to see your build. I just bought the LifeReef overflow & the LifeReef skimmer. Waiting on the skimmer, it's been shipped. I can't wait to get my system started...

I have a 20+ year old LifeReef that's been running more or less continuously and has been moved through 5 states over the years. I accidentally destroyed the overflow box when it got smashed in a move, but other than that, it's a fabulous product from one of the most dedicated person in the industry.

Great looking set up. I do have a question about the lifereef skimmer. How do you like? And how does it perform? Don't take this the wrong way, but the skimmer looks pretty antiquated by todays standards. Not saying its not going to work just seems like there would be more modern and efficient options.

I have a reef octopus skimmer I replaced with the life reef skimmer. It took a few days but it's producing some nasty stuff now. I had to adjust the reef octopus all the time. I am not sure if that was due to a poor sump design from Precision Marine

I've run both the 24" and 30" tall Lifereef skimmers over the last 4 1/2 years. They rarely need adjusting. The 30" tall unit in particular pulls out some really nasty nog. Cleaning the cup a couple of weeks ago I just about gagged.
I've dealt to a large extent with the energy efficiency issue by replacing the Mag Drive pump with a Water Blaster pump.

I'm running a Water Blaster HY7000 instead of the Mag 12 the skimmer shipped with, it saves about 30 watts, not a huge savings (I got more of a savings by replacing my Blue Line main pump, 88 watts vs. 290. I probably overstated my energy savings from the skimmer pump change.
The skimmer seems to work just fine with the Water Blaster, it's not a pressure rated pump but the higher flow rate vs. the Mag seems to make up the difference. I do get some nasty nog with this skimmer, and its pretty much set and forget.
