Is this always the case? I will probably be acquiring all of my fish from them and if this is their "standard" SG I'll go ahead and set my QT there.

What about their invert tanks?

That's what surprised me about Liveaquaria keeping theirs so low! I was thinking there must be some biological advantage to shipping with lower salinity if they did it. Anyone know what Vividaquariums ships at?

Fish have an internal salinity of 1.008. they drink a lot and pass concentrated urine to maintain it in marine waters, averaging 1.0264. Going down doesn't hurt them ,short term if it's not below 1.008. Thus 1.009 is the low cut off for hyposalinity treatments .

The problem is getting them back to tolerance of a more natural sg from a very low one at 1.013,1.015 or even 1.018ppm. They need time to adjust to large upward swings or risk osmotic shock from fluids runinng out of them resulting in a loss of internal sg ,a loss of homeostasis, messed up body chemistry and in many cases death.
Gernerally a rise of.001 per day is considered a safe change. So, a fish coming in at 1.013 would need slow adjustments daily for 10 days or more to be on the safe side. Drip acclimation won't do it. Long cofinements to bag water are also harmful.

I agree low sg may supress some diseases which will bounce back when sg is raised to more natural levels. Makes me nervous.

Last time I checkeda shipment from live aquaria it was around 1.024,IIRC Actually surprised me. If you ask them ,they will probably tell you to enable you to set up qt aprropriately.

As far as I know, yes. According to their web site, they keep SG at 1.018 - 1.020. My last shipment was 1.017. Diver's Den livestock is kept at 1.025.

According to their website, inverts are kept at 1.023 - 1.025.
