just do a muriatic acid bath and remove any doubt. It'll be safe to use right away and that will likely get rid of the vast majority of anything you're worried about leeching. Save all the hassle. Takes 20 minutes.

Why do you want to take rocks from your yard to the ocean and dump them in the ocean only to retrieve them a few months later?

People use holey rock in cichlid tanks because cichlids like hard water, the limestone helps buffer the water. Down here in Texas we don't need the holey rock because our water comes from mainly limestone aquifers, making it ideal hardness already. I would be cautious using holey rock in your SW tank as it could buffer the water in ways you don't want it to. It's also nowhere near the porousness of good LR.

Yeah I think the idea is to buy some Brs rock saver and then maybe dump that. Ive just got my tank how I want it. Maybe in six months I will consider doing this. Right now I'm at the point where i can start buying corals. The idea lives on It might take me a few months to stock my tank with the corals i want and then I could dump some rocks. I'm guessing it will be a year or more before i need more room.

I think you might want to think this through if you plan to dump rock in the near shore waters. Do you have experience beyond the breakers on the Texas coast in a kayak? If you really just want to get real life on the rock why not just place it in the Laguna Madre near Brazos Santiago Pass. There is some pretty cool stuff that grows on the rocks near the Coast Guard Station. Even if you did make it off shore I would bet you would never find the rock again when you went to retrieve it. Just my two cents.

Lol I was looking up some make your own rock methods. Cement crushed oyster shells and crushed coral. I would add some aragonite sand. I could mix it all down there and build me a structure. This will be for a 75 or 90 gallon. Dig a hole in the sand and let it dry a few days. I have kayaked off shore before and fished. I went about 1/4 to 1/2 mile. I figure the third sandbar never gets out past 1/3 mile. So somewhere between there and a half mile. I was going to do this with a large blow off raft and lifejacket. I figure they can hold me 185 plus 75-100 lbs of rock. I'll tie it with a large nylon rope black and a floresent 3 litter bottle plus I can judge my are by the condos. It might take me a hour to find it in early september but at the price its worth a try. crushed coral 25 crushed oyster free bag of concretes 3 bucks a bag of sand is like 10 bucks. 38 bucks plus a raft.

So hat have you seen on the rocks? I know where your talking about. Maybe I just don't want someone snaggin it. If i put it a 1/2 mile out nobody will get it.

If you want some actual LARGE rock call BRS and get some Pukani rock. I ordered 50lbs of it and asked for a large piece for the center of my 120. I didn't expect to get a piece almost 36"L by 24"w and 18"T. I actually sold the piece to another reefer and had to order a smaller centerpiece.

I have used Texas Holey Rock. I had it in a cichlid tank before switching it over to salt. It is very heavy dense rock. I have only a few large pieces left and it is mainly for a base. There is no live growth on it. It is not porous like the live rock that is used.

I still need to call them. The last time i talked to them they said they started doing this because winter texans where racked them in and letting them die for the shells and stuff.
•It is unlawful to take more than 15 live univalve snails during a day which include no more than 2 each of the following snails: lightning whelk, horse conch, Florida fighting conch, pear whelk, banded tulip, or Florida rocksnail.
•It is unlawful to take or kill shell-bearing mollusks, hermit crabs, starfish, or sea urchins from Nov. 1 through Apr. 30 within the following boundary: the bay and pass sides of South Padre Island from the east end of the north jetty at Brazos Santiago Pass to the west end of West Marisol Drive in the town of South Padre Island, out 1,000 yards from the mean high-tide line, and bounded to the south by the centerline of the Brazos Santiago Pass.

brazos santaigo pass is the fishing jetties and a 1000 yards is less than a mile a mile is 1700. so about 2/3 of a mile. I will have to take these rocks down near the jettis. The line in between the two jetties is where it starts so i will put it within the thing.

Importation of Wildlife Resources

It is unlawful to import a wildlife resource into this state or possess a wildlife resource taken outside this state unless the person possessing the wildlife resource possesses a valid hunting, fishing, or other applicable license, stamp endorsement, tag, permit, or document for the state or country in which the wildlife resource was legally taken. Such documentation must be produced upon request of a game warden.

It is unlawful to land by boat or person any fish taken from public water within a protected length limit, or in excess of the daily bag limit or possession limit established for those fish in Texas, regardless of the state or country in which they were caught.

A person possessing a wildlife resource for importation must produce, upon request of a game warden, a valid driver's license or personal identification certificate.

A person may possess an animal or bird killed outside of Texas that is listed in Texas as threatened or endangered, provided that the person possesses proof that the animal or bird possessed was lawfully killed. Proof consists of bill-of-sale, license tag, or notarized affidavit.

Well I'll do some diving and collect some urchins hermits and starfish if anyone wants any. I can easy send them One day ground throught the state. Ground shipping is cheap and can keep them in my tank till you want them. Maybe I just take some pics and you can tell me what you want. CODYREED@( SPI FREE DIVE PRODUCTS LOL> I can easily cath you guys scorpion fish as well.
