When I started in the hobby, I bought a BRS unit because I thought it was the best deal. But after going through a crazy amount of DI resin, I've switched my filters and membrane to SpectraPure. Their 99% rejection membrane can save a lot of money on DI costs...

If I did it again, I'd go Spectrapure from the start. But one thing to note is that outside the filters, these units are essentially the same parts put together the same way. So if you want Spectrapure filters, but somehow have a great deal on another unit, get the other unit and when it's time for new filters/membrane, go spectra pure.

In my experience both the pre-filters and the membrane make a big difference -- especially the membrane. I got 97% rejection from Dow Filmtec (what BRS uses) and get 99% rejection from Spectrapure. That;s big change in TDS that you are putting on DI resin (and the result is a big $ savings when it comes to needing new DI resin).

The units themselves don't matter (in my experience), it's ALL about the filters/membranes.

The membrane I could see making a difference, just not the filters. The KX Matrikx filters that BRS uses are quality products. I put off changing the resin in my BRS RO unit because I just get lazy, and my TDS is still 0 at the end of the day (measuring with both the inline meter and an external).

Even sticking with BRS' filters, when I changed from their standard sediment filter (Puretrex) to the GE ROSave, the lifetime and pressure was MUCH better with the better GE filter than their standard and I had lower TDS off the membrane (likely due to higher pressure).

I didn't try other carbon blocks, but those might be similar (if you don't have chloramines).

I'd argue that even the filters matter. And BRS sells excellent sediment filters, they just don't come with their systems (even the deluxe systems come with Puretrex).
