Yes 50w in a 55 is a bad idea, it will do a lot more then just "not heat the tank" at least mine did.
Very unsafe for a number of reasons from fishes health to mine lol

Anyone know of some quite power heads brands?

Your heater should be able to run in the on position 24/7 without catching fire. What brand heater was this?
