yes, it seems more centered around bioload and tank size. the unfortunate part about that is for a beginner like me determining bioload is fairly difficult.

So basically any skimmer will do as long as it's sized properly?

And yea trying to find out what works the best for the dollar is difficult.

Came with the mag 12 but when that died on me I went with the mag 18.
Don't know that I really saw that much of a diff on my system, so I'd say either would work.

I'm surprised you didn't go with a laguna or fluval. Mags are decent pumps though. I've ran them on numerous occasions.

i have had atb. bubble magnus, bk, vertex cone and regular, euroreef, asm, rlls, etss. skimz, reef octopus, ati, several models of each skimmer and some other brands as well, i generally have always had between a 40 to 80g system so i had favorites on different size tanks. the atb 840 was my favorite as well as the vertex alpha 200 and a vertex in100 with a sicce 2500 pump. loved the skimz sm202 as well but was too much skimmer for my tank. the etss sump buddy 40 was killer also, but made to much noise and used to much electricity

And I can walk into any LFS and pick up a new one if it dies. Sometimes convenience tips the scale.

Agree with Dennis, I have had various types of skimmers over the years and presently have a Life Reef skimmer and love it. There is only 1 point of adjustment ( the gate valve) and if your pump goes belly up you can use any pump that meets the flow requirements

If I didn't have a Life reef I would own a MTC

They move a ton more water and typically have less breakable parts and the pumps are typically cheaper.
Needlewheel skimmers are more energy efficient usually, more compact and can be set & forget.
Agree completely. I wouldnt look at any skimmer beside nw. Nothing comes close to these skimmers. they have only advantages compared to other skimmer tech no disadvantage.

I been using the same skimmer for over ten years. Its a countercurrent recirculating nw skimmer. Nw pump have improve greatly. Im buying a new pump to replace ten year old pump. The new pump cost only $60 uses half the power and outputs 64% more air.

Nothing beats a recirculating nw skimmers. Truely are set and forget. My skimmer havent been adjusted in 5 years since it was set up on a new tank. but you can easily adjust it to skim wetter or dry.

Really will never go back to the older style skimmer. They really have made no advancement in 25 years.

Are you replacing a Aqua Bee skimmer pump?
