I've been happy with my Champion 2000w inverter. Thankfully I've only had to use it a handful of times and it's enough to power pumps/heaters for 3 tanks (150/40/30), my fridge/freezer and my stand alone freezer.
If I had to do it again, I'd probably buy a Honda.

If you really care about quiet, be sure and read the specs and how they're measured. "Inverter generator" usually results in reasonably clean power, but some are much louder than others.

Also, the conversion kits I pointed out earlier are really tri-fuel kits - allowing the generator to run on gas, propane, or natural gas.

Battery?

Kohler looks to have a very nice solution, too.

If you have an open budget and want backup for your tank only, the best choice is a DC Honda generator.

If you buy a regular AC generator, you need to buy one that has very low distortion - preferable 5% or less. Then, you need to put your equipment on high quality protector.

The Honda gennys are stupid quiet.

I ice fish. Here in minnesota it's a past time.

When someone has a honda, you know they're serious. They are almost silent. Most reef tanks are louder than the genny itself.
