Deep Reef's 150 gallon tall DT hurricane Irma build
Well today I put it all together,
Used corner clamps for alignment. Put the frames together, used 1x3’s to support the sump area and attached them with pocket screws. I did this instead of using 2x4’s like my last build to give me a little deeper water retention area in case of a leak. Then assembled the pieces The stand is a foot longer than the tank as I’ve created a side compartment to house the controls. To give me as much room as possible I also pocket screwed the vertical 2x4’s in this area. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Originally the plan was to make the stand 36” high. However, when I was rough fitting things it seemed too high. I wanted to be able to see over the top rim of the tank. I dropped it 1 inch to 35”. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Cut the pieces for the canopy, pocket screwed them into a frame
Then assembled Checked the opening Finally, I received the 24x48x 1/4” abs sheet for the bottom of the tank. My last tank, I used egg crate and it held a lot of detritus that the clean up crew just couldn’t get to. Officially my rock was ready to come out of its 2 month soak today but since the stand wasn’t finished it will have to wait

Its's coming out great. Are you going to put doors over the 2 x 4s?

Installed the mounts for my AI Hydra 52’s. I made them removable so I could get the bracket in and out.

Yes doors are on order should be here any day. I didn’t make them as I don’t have the tools to properly route for the inset panels. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I lost power from Irma for about a week. Thankfully I have a vortech battery back up for my pump. After 70 hours I took the battery pack to my mom's house (she had power sooner than i) and recharged the battery pack and then brought it back home. It kept my tank alive. I'm sorry to see you lossed everything.

Just curious, why did you get a full sheet of abs to cover the bottom of the tank? You don't want your sand/rock against the glass?

Yes to protect the glass. Many of the custom tank builders use abs on top of the glass. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Where did you order your rock from? Also can you go into a little more detail on the build of your canopy, looking to steal some ideas for mine.
Thanks Jim |

Rock was all from BRS. Canopy was built using 1x3’s for the sides and 1x2’s to connect them together. The pocket screws helped me to eliminate some wood bracing I had last time. This is making the canopy lighter. Last time my wife had difficulty opening it to help me feed. I install the 1x3’s where the hinge will go raising them so they will be even with the top. I do this as most hinges have a 1/2” or less dimension to the screw hole and if the plywood top was there I would be screwing into the side of its edge which won’t be strong. Deep Reef's 150 gallon tall DT hurricane Irma build
No I’m going with flush hinges in stainless steel. The piano hinges around town are either brass or nickel. My last hinges were brass and started corroding. Flush hinges are nice as the can be surface mounted and they close into themselves so the gap they create is minimal. That is why I used the 1x3 on end were the front and rear canopy meet. I also installed it so that the top of the 1x3 was even with top of canopy. This provides for a solid place to screw and not screwing into the side of the plywood Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Deep Reef's 150 gallon tall DT hurricane Irma build
Finished all wood work except for drilling ventilation holes in rear and top and sanding.
Canopy Stand There is an inset piece on the left side of the stand. I bought a piece of marble tile to lay in there creating a place to work or place something so the extension portion of the stand for controls will be useful Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
