Really? I mean food, salt, electricity, water from rodi, livestock purchases.

I was also being aggressive with that number as I try to buy in bulk and may go a month or so without buying anything.

My bil loves to play golf and he estimates that he spends $8000 per year not counting equipment purchases. He also lives in NC so he doesn't get to play year around. I have friends here in FL that love to boat and fish. Buying a boat and getting 2 nautical miles per gallon with gas at $3+ is also a real expensive hobby. My point is that many popular hobbies are a lot more expensive than keeping a reef tank.

1200.00 a year on a glass box seems like a lot of money to potentially put toward a mortgage. Maybe I’m cheap?

Depends on your point of view - this is a high-end hobby.

The average cost of an oil change on an average family car is about $60.
Upgrade to a Jaguar SJ6 and the cost is over $400.
Now you have two choices. Buy option A, or Learn to change your own oil on the Jag which then costs about the same as option A.

My point is, there is always work to achieve your goals.

I struggle with that same concept and am eternally guilty for having a tank actually. Especially when saving for a new home

Life has priorities. If owning a reef tank is stopping someone from getting a home or other important things in life then dump the tank. I am at the age and stage of life where what I spend on this hobby is inconsequential to my everyday needs.

60 bucks for an oil change?

I change ours for about 22.00

Full synthetic is pricey, ya you can get a cheap oil change with regular grade oil.

Even at a 20 minute oil change station, for full synthetic it's 80$ in my neck of the woods.

People still change their own oil these days? I used to do it, back when motors weren't put in sideways, and the oil filter wasn't on top of the motor.

True but at the same time you shouldn’t be changing full synthetic near as much as regular oil. Beside the fact that no commercial passenger car actual needs fed full synthetic anyway.

Yes, there are people less fortune than some of us that have to pinch pennies where they can. To some people the difference between 20 and 80.00 is significant. I try not to loose sight of that.

My KIA Sorrento calls for full synthetic only, anything else voids the engine warranty. I think most new vehicles these days call for full synthetic only.

To your other point, recommended change is 6k to 8k depending on driving conditions, as opposed to 3k with regular oil. I typically only change my oil twice a year these days, so it is cheaper in the long run.

Needing a specific thing for warranty purposes is a whole other argument entirely.

And yes we are derailing the thread. I’m leaving now. Lol

I don't have a lot of money to spend but absolutely love the hobby. So I bought my tank on dollar days from petco. I bought used equipment from other hobbies and also ebay. So now I have a very nice 20 long that I really enjoy but doesn't break the bank. Don't try to keep up with the Joneses.

I have a brand new Jeep - Took it in for it's first oil change, full synthetic... about $100.

I'll be doing the next one myself.

Wrong forum, but do you donate your salary to charity?

I get where PirateToast is coming from.
In the winter my tanks add $200 to my electric bill. I spend $50 a month on NSF and R/O. I spend ??? on food and supplements. I do maint. on 8 tanks and try to memorize all the feeding schedules. This hobby is a huge commitment in time and money and I often contemplate quiting. Especially when things go awry for no apparent reason. But for now I am just working on downsizing a bit. Perhaps I will quit another day.
Cheers! Mark

I have known plenty of people who keep adding more tanks and then get to the point that it is no longer fun. Cut back to one nice tank and enjoy!

Well....I definitely won’t say you’re wrong there. Damage kind of done on my part. You don’t really notice it when it’s happening. Like any addiction. Reefing is a legitimate psychological addiction for me

Couldn't agree more! My wife is in process of rehoming a turtle that she rescued so that will pull a 100g tank out of the pic. - yay. Then I will be getting my son to give up his 55g tropical that he neglects.
Cheers! Mark

I also have a JK.

The pentastar 100% does not need, nor does the manual call exclusively for, full synthetic oil.

Ok I’m really leaving this time.

In Vancouver with gas at $1.60L and climbing I spend $100 on fuel just to go do one of my other hobbies!!!

my view is like any pet or animal you take care of if $20,60 or 100 is the deciding factor- you really cant afford the animal and need to rethink your priorities and whats best for your self and the animal in question.

when I got my dog as puppy he was ment to be 55-65 lbs full grown........ hes now 95lbs and 6" taller than normal and not overweight at all. he eats a $90 bag of food in 2.5-3 weeks but im not the type of person that "i dont want him because hes bigger than i thought" or "he eats more than i thought" or whatever other BS reason people have for giving up their animals. When I picked him up from the breeder I made the silent commitment to take care of him and provide him the best life possible. as corny as the dog memes are Im his whole life and all he cares about is making me happy. I feel the same way about my aquarium I need to provide the best possible life for them, when my 250 G blew out while i was in the USA for work and I lost everything i was devastated even though it was out of my control it took over a year to setup and rebuild.

that said. dont give up !my reef tank brought me a lot of joy and Im sure yours did too. every animal you ever have you will have rough patches but life goes on.
