Really, the tank is so clear, I wasn't sure it was filled until I saw fish.

Shane,
The tanks got a glass brace around the bottom, so the Starboard is recessed into it. I'm going to look into those lights - Thanks! You know I know diddly about equipment and brands. Quote:
![]() I use calcium chloride and baking soda. Blue chromis are real delicate when small, when big they are tough as nails. I've only had this guy by himself, they tend to fight each other but nothing else. Quote:
![]() Don't have a clue on the blenny yet. Angus caught it in the Bahamas and so far it has no name. Quote:
Clean and clean is good for SPS. These guys are growing over a inch a month. Doug, finally a picture so I can show you that skimmer! |

Did you ever outline all the names of your critters on a thread?
I'd love an intro to all of them - every now and then I see one referred to by name, but without the fish/coral type associated I'm lost ![]() And I do love that they're all named, for some reason I want to name mine and have yet to ...

I think the tank looks awesome!! It is wonderfully unique. I think a comment in a different thread was Frank Lloyd Wright + Reef = Starboard reef.
But I did not see the Queen Angel?? Was she just hiding or did she have to go back to the ocean? Thanks for sharing! Connie |

For some strange reason I'm sitting here chuckling to myself. But I share Jerel's position on DSB's so I think he'll understand
![]() Any chance you can really turn this hobby on it's ear and run that puppy skimmerless? I'd be ROTFLMAO if you could find a way to pull that one off. Think of the fun that would be had. Seriously though, a mighty fine job working outside the "box". I was another that actually thought I was looking at a tank without water in it. It looks so unbelievably clear in there that it's hard to believe my eyes. Brett Last edited by Putawaywet; 01/03/2004 at 07:09 AM. |

I know, but it would make for some interesting arguments on the difinitive way to set up a tank.

it certainly is bare
![]() nice looking tank though - how long has it been running and what is your rock structure built up on?

That white bottom is `starboard' ... very similar to cutting board material, but the stuff he's using is actually from boating-uses.
The thread detailing this setup [and eventually a number of places to get this material, other folks who used it in different colors] ... is at: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showth...ight=starboard --- And Gregt is dead on with the skimmer - BB's main requirement is getting the detritus/etc out of the tank ASAP. Unlike a DSB, which is `sinking' and storing the detritus, poop, food residue, phosphates ... BB is base on a high-flow, detritus-suspension, wet-skimming removal of all such products from the tank as quick as possible. This quickly removes all phoshphates from the system ... and will get other compounds gone before they have a chance to break down [instead of dealing with nitrate reduction, this removes things before they have a chance to break down and cause nitrates ... or at worst while they're in the process of such]. Key to this all is the big, efficient skimmer ... as it's the main `removal' technique for all this crud. I find dumping my skimmer cup in my toilet is the best method for `processing' phosphates and nitrates ... far better than leaving them in the tank [for algae/etc to go to work on].

Connie, Malcomb finally met his maker. I have to tell you, as much as I loved Malcomb, it had become his tank and I will never have another big angel in it.
jackson, all they need is to get excited for the processes to take place. I'm not trying to reduce zoox for color, I'm going for growth. PAW I think we're already there. I don't see any earth shattering equipment changes coming to reduce nutrients in closed systems. Going skimmerless would be going backwards and back to the days of Lee and the "Natural Aquarium". No one could keep his systems running either because of nutrient/phosphate build up. Mark's right. Where do nitrates come from? It you remove it before it gets there, why would you have nitrates? |

Do you notice a salinity constantly fluctuating with the wet skimming????

I take out about a 1/2gal of skimmate a day. Most of the time I just add RO/DI for evaporation. About once a month I'll test for salinity and bump it back up by adding salt water instead of RO/DI to replace evaporation. In a month it will drop to around 1.023-4 from 1.025. |
