That's terrible news Sean. I lost all of the corals in my old 60g in a similar fashion. The chiller pump failed to restart after a power failure. It's a devastating feeling.

Try to keep your chin up.

Sean,

Don't quit! I've had temps in the mid 90s a couple of times - both when my chiller pump failed. Anything that makes it through the initial spike CAN live - you just have to stay on top of your water chemistry. Watch for the ammonia spike from the dead/dying flesh and the impact of the temp spike on the biological filtration. Use carbon, crank the skimmer, and do lot's of 25% water changes (I know hard in a large system, but do it daily for a week anyways...).

Good luck Sean...

Kevin

Sean,
I feel for you. As many have said, don't quit. Hopefully it won't be as bad as you may be thinking.

My hat's off to you for keeping your cool. You did what you could IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, and got things going again. You can't blame yourself.

Let's all hope that it's not as bad. Reefs are incredible, and can bounce back. I'm sure if given the chance, yours will too.

Hang in there bud.

that truly bites!! hang in there. I'd definatly look into your draining system [overflows] as you can't afford that to happen with a power outage.
out of curiousity, what exactly are you running that couls make your tank so hot?? is it location as well? hope all works out.

While he's at it, he could probably test his pH, measure his salinity, test for copper, and check his TDS a few times a day. Just cuz you're at home doesn't mean you have time to check your fish tank all the time.
I guess you could do that too if one wished.

It takes 1 second to glance at a thermometer. It takes much longer to test for the other things. The last time I checked temperature was the one thing that could wipe out your tank the quickest and is the easiest to check.

I spend quite a bit of time just looking at my tank daily if you don't then why do you have one?

I am not being a jerk or trying to sound holier than though. I bet everyone who reads this thread will pay a little more attention to their tanks temp from here on out.

Sorry to hear this Sean. I hope you bounce back, I've learned quite a lot from your experiences so far. Many of us would benefit from a "How to survive a catastrophic tank meltdown" thread.

You might not be ready for humor yet, but there's got to be a "rock cooking" joke here somewhere... sorry.

Sean, don't give up. Look at it this way, you know the next time around what the weak link was and can correct it. When you get back on your feet, I am happy to send you some frags.

Wow - sean. As someone who's been through a catestophic meltdown of my own, I can feel your pain. It's a horrible, horrible feeling.

You will move on though... You will rebuild it. You will make it better....

after all you've contributed here, i can't tell you how bad i feel.
Pretty much sums up my sentiments - I can't even begin to count the times I've thought "well his opinion is always good, guess I'll go with that"

MAG pumps ain't got nothing on RIO, same league absolute garbage - can't even begin to tell ya how much I detest them (sorry, I realize that doesn't help).

Sean, I am truly sorry to hear about your situation. Are there any updates? I'm hoping it wasn't as bad when you checked on it this morning. I'm just getting started in this hobby and I can't imagine what it must be like to see years of work potentially get destroyed. We are all wishing you the best of luck!! Keep us posted!!!!!!

That really sucks... This makes me wonder if simpler is better. I only have a 46 gallon bow. 250 watt 20K live rock and 2 600 gph power heads. Everything has been good for a couple of years now. If I upgrade to 120 Gallon Tanks will a fuge, sump, reactor, skimmer all be neccessary. I always thought the more I have the more likely something will fail.

Sean stay with it buddy. I'm sure all the knowledge you've gained with this tragedy will benefit you in the future. I hope there are some survivors for you.

the same thing happened to me about a month ago, the tubing fell out of the chiller pump, tank went up to 92.8 degrees. I lost a Coral Beauty who was nearly 5 years old, a cleaner shrimp and two neon gobies.

Most of the corals came back to life, but it took weeks, I think there was massive tissue damage from the heat that needed repair, but eventually they came back out. Now things are back to normal.

Keep your head up.
