Currently it is dripping out at 1 drip/second until this time Friday, then I will measure the output for No2/No3 to see what's happening.

I just got a second job and now I can afford it. I just ordered one. I'll report back on my experiences as soon as I get news.

I'm starting with 70+ nitrates, and a heavy heavy bio load in my 300 gal reef.
XL regal, XL yellow tang, large powder blue, large kole, large copperband butterfly, 3 large clowns, 4 gobies,,, and a few others. I bought the denitrator because I want to add a clown trigger and maybe a queen angel. Yeh I know they are not reef safe but I'll train 'em.

Too early to tell.
I'm still in the cycling period @ 1 drip per second.
tonight I will increase the drip rate to about 3 per second.

I did test the effluent last night (thursday).

It tested with trace no2 and no3.

After day 1 (wednesday) I tested no No2 and tank-level No3 (about 35ppm)

Got mine - how do the strips work - no directions on colors, etc - dipped one in tank and colors did not change

did you have a rough time getting your ehiem to get good flow - having trouble getting air out

how do you open the bleeder valve - can't seem to figure it out and I have a well documented respectable IQ

just to let yall know, my DIY De-nitrator coil has completely eliminated my nitrates. they are undectable on test. have it at a good fast drip. took approx 6 weeks to cycle, and it is working perfectly. best advice I can give is invest in a good valve. I test the effluent by just running it into test tube to the specified volume for the test. I had nitrates over 150ppm, and those have been eliminated. I feed once daily either flake or Cyclopeze and one cube of emerald entree. 9 fish total. Watanebei angel, Purple tang, 2 firefish gobies, 2 bar gobies, 1 false percule, 1 bicolor blenny, 1 diamond goby. 75 gallon tank, setup for 5.5 years. last water change was Jan 12.

1 week update

So the Denitrifier has been in use for almost exactly 1 week.

As of right now, I have noticed the following:

For the first 3 days(tues, wed, thurs), I ran it at 1 drip/second.
I measured the effluent thurs night at 1 drip/second and found
NO2 = trace amount
NO3 = tank level (about 35ppm)

Increased the drip rate to about 3 drip/second on friday.
measured the effluent again:
NO2 = undetectable
NO3 = tank level (about 35ppm)

So - as of friday - no change

Same drip rate on sunday
NO2 = undetectable
NO3 = about 30ppm / Tank level NO3 = about 35ppm
I used a Hagen NO2 test and a Seachem NO3 test kit along with with some strip tests because I had 'em

So - as of sunday - no change in tank level NO3 but a slightly lower (about 5ppm) effluent reading.

Today, tuesday, I did a full test of the tank:

Ph - 8.1-8.3
Calcuim- 450 on average
Salinity - 1.024
Alkalinity - 190 ppm
Nitrites - 0
Nitrates - 35 ppm

And tested the effluent:
NO2 = undectable
NO3 = 20-25ppm

Anyway - I guess it still too early to tell whether it's working yet. I definately think it's going in the right direction just based on the fact that the tank level NO3 hasen't risen / stayed steady over the past week & also because the effluent has slowly decreased from 30/35ppm to 20/25ppm - a full shade lower on the test kits.

After the effluent gets to 0ppm if the tank level NO3 hasn't decreased enough I can still increase the drip rate up to 6 drips/second.

I'll post again after a few more tests.

log man, looks like things are working smoothly. the nitrator is working perfectly, just hte ammt of flow thru it hasnt quite made a dent in the overall volume of the tank.

test strips

Are these test strips worthless or am I missing something - this test is after 1 day of running denitrater (which is not really relevent to make my point about my tank water) and I know darn well I have no nitrites in my tank

Project started:
Friday 2/3/05: The XL Sulfur denitrator was started with 1 drop per sec. Current tank nitrates: somewhere between 25 and 50, closer to 50...

I use those strips for my FOWLR tanks and clownfish growout and I like them. They aren't extremely precise, but they give you a general idea. If I dip one in any of the reeftanks though, both patches stay white. Are they old or could they have been exposed to moisture? The color on the nitrite patch there is a little disturbing. Just in case, have you tested with a traditional kit too?

they were shipped 8 or so of them in a baggie - so i don't know what they have been exposed to before i got them - midwest just throws some in the order for their denitrifier

two different nitrite test show 0

I guess the strips got compromised along the way - no biggie

Could you guys tell me what the consistancy of the sulfur media is? Are the sulfur pieces soft and kind of clumpy or are they hard pieces?

TIA
