Reverendmaynard: Yeah, I guess so!
Bernacchi: I've had a lot of success with ESV products. I currently use their B-Ionic two part Alk and Calcium product. I've got a 60 gallon tank though, so depending upon the size of your tank, it can get expensive. I like the product though and I'm sure you could find either a Calcium Chloride or Hydroxide product that would help raise just your calcium. I'd take a close look while you are adding the Kent product. If you see a bunch of snowflakes in the water, immediately after you add it, then you are precipitating. You'll either want to add that product as a drip or switch to another brand that won't "snowflake" on you. |

Here is the Salifert test kit chart. The middle numbers are in Dkh and the end numbers are in meq/l.
Not sure what the Rev is talking about with your 180. Unless your test kit is different than Salifert. But lets say you were reading 1.80 meq/l that would be a dkh of about 5. That is low and needs to be raised to about 8 or 9 dkh. I hope this helps BILL. One more thing. I use nothing but Seachem products and swear byt them. I have had no problems at all "knock on wood". To raise my Alk I use the Seachem buffer. I also like that you can call Seachem for any advice all week long. The person I deal with at Seachem is Rusty and he is real nice. They will help you get all your numbers straight. BILL

Quote:
meq/l=ppm*.02 dkh=ppm*.056 Therefore, 180ppm = 3.6meq/l = 10.08 dkh, which is a fine level. |

Gotcha Thanks for clearing that up for me. I just assumed that all test kits were in meq/l not ppm. I would try a different calcium raising product. Give Seacham a try. Make sure you do not dose more than the suggested amounts. BILL

Being new to saltwater setups I purchased Red Sea Reef Lab which was what the LFS was pushing that week. Unfortunately, results for ALK is read in general terms of "low-normal-high" only. As a qiuck check I got some 5 in 1 dip strips which is in ppm. Salifert test kit was ordered yesterday and hopefully will give me a more useable reading. Still today after adding 4oz. for liquid calcium yesterday {without any precipitation} the calcium is still unchanged at 350. I also use Seachem Builder & Buffer. Any ideas beyound waiting for the Salifert Kit?

could be a bad test kit. I'd wait for the salifert before adding any more.
