I can send all you west coasters some sugar white northwest Florida panhandle sand--silica--for a small fee--hurricane debris included free of charge
All kidding aside, I think it's pretty cool of your grandparents to take enough interest in their grandkids hobbys to go out and collect a bag of sand. I think I'd try to keep it in one corner to be able to pick it out in the future. |

Well...
Kaua'i waters don't support coral very much, mainly on the west side where you need a boat to get to. But after snorkling there, the sand is some of the most active I'm ever seen in nature. I spent an entire afternoon just watching the sand - it was so cool. Tons of gobies, pistol shrimp, worms, wierd things, tons of stuff. I also think it's cool when family and friend show an interest in a very complicated hobby. Sometime I want to tell my friends now I lowered my Nitrates or acclimated a clam and they just look at me like I'm speaking in chinese. |

Pretty much all beach sand in Hawai'i is biologically based, that is, from the breakdown of reef and shells. That is why the sand has such a light texture (as opposed to sand in Cali., for example, which results from the breakdown of rock(i.e., silica). Nanoreeflover is right about it not being "taboo." Only lava and black and green sand are what you shouldn't take so that you don't offend Pele, the goddess of the volcano. Incidentally, the green and black sand beaches are the only ones in Hawai'i that aren't biologically based. Yes, I said green sand, there are a couple of spectacular green sand beaches, like Mahana Bay. |

Also here in Hawaii, there are certain areas where the local population does not take kindly to "outsiders" removing anything from "their" beaches or waters ... not a healthy situation to put oneself in .... believe me. Beaches that tourists frequent the most are not of this type, however. But anyone going off the beaten path best be aware of this. As for the comment that the person at the airport who inspected and found the sand did not appear concerned about it either a) assumed it was dry beach sand which is okay to take or b) did not know about the regulations about removing "live" sand. They are more concerned about people taking fruits and vegetables out of the state due to disease and pest issues. So enjoy your sand, but next time tell your relatives to check the local regulations before they decide to bring you back anything else for your aquarium. Finally, yes the sand is of biological origin but can you be sure there aren't ANY volcanic sand grains mixed in there too?? Afterall, all the rocks there are of volcanic origin ... will Pele be upset that those specs are gone? ... I guess only time will tell ... Aloha! JCD |

They did check regulations before getting the sand. I should have also mentioned that they have been living in Kauai for about 3 months out of the year for about 10 years now. So I'm pretty sure they arent totally unaware of laws and regulations. Its perfectly legal to take sand from the beach as long as its not more than the allowed amount. Here are some links:
http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscur...0205a-0044.htm And on this page about a 1/4 the way down: http://www.state.hi.us/dlnr/dar/libr...l_liverock.htm I cant find anywhere that it says it is not ok to take sand as long as its in moderation. If you have any links that tell more about it, please share them. I appreciate your post and the information Travis |

" §205A-44 Prohibitions. (a) The mining or taking of sand, dead coral or coral rubble, rocks, soil, or other beach or marine deposits from the shoreline area is prohibited with the following exceptions: (1) The taking from the shoreline area of the materials, not in excess of one gallon per person per day, for reasonable, personal, noncommercial use, provided that stricter provisions may be established by the counties;" The second link is a bit more vague in that it says you can collect sand "under special circumstances" but doesn't say what they are. Your message above is the first time you have mentioned that your grandparents were aware of the regulations and did check ... something you neglected to mention in your previous posts. Since this is the case and they did indeed follow those regulations, then there is no problem Equally interesting is the following little tidbit from your second link that most people posting about collecting fish while in Hawaii on vacation fail to do, is apply for the following permit: 10) Aquarium Permit - required for any person to use fine mesh net for collecting aquatic life for an aquarium. Report required if commercial. HRS §188-31. §188-31 Permits to take aquatic life for aquarium purposes. (a) Except as prohibited by law, the department, upon receipt of a written application, may issue an aquarium fish permit, not longer than one year in duration, to use fine meshed traps, or fine meshed nets other than throw nets, for the taking of marine or freshwater nongame fish and other aquatic life for aquarium purposes. (b) Except as prohibited by law, the permits shall be issued only to persons who can satisfy the department that they possess facilities to and can maintain fish and other aquatic life alive and in reasonable health. (c) It shall be illegal to sell or offer for sale any fish and other aquatic life taken under an aquarium fish permit unless those fish and other aquatic life are sold alive for aquarium purposes. The department may adopt rules pursuant to chapter 91 for the purpose of this section. (d) For the purposes of this section: (1) "Aquarium purposes" means to hold salt water fish, freshwater nongame fish, or other aquatic life alive in a state of captivity as pets, for scientific study, or for public exhibition or display, or for sale for these purposes; and (2) "Aquarium fish permit" means a permit issued by the board for the use of fine mesh nets and traps to take salt water fish, freshwater nongame fish, or other aquatic life for aquarium purposes. [L 1953, c 124, §§1, 2, 3; RL 1955, §21-64; am L 1961, c 30, §§1, 2 and c 132, §2; HRS §188-31; am L 1979, c 154, §1; gen ch 1985; am L 1992, c 96, §2] Aloha! JCD |

I just got back from Kaua`i and I brought back about a pound of live sand soaked in ocean water. I dropped in in my tank and as soon as I opened the container a mini bittle star crawled out. I can't wait to see what else comes out of it.

My grandparents brought me back a couple rocks from Aruba, they were on the beach and all dried up. Now they are covered in coralline in my tank. I think it's cool we have people like that who think of us.

That's pretty sweet man, I'd like to be able to say my sand came from Hawaii Sift through the bad and take in the good.. it doesn't matter what others say/think, it's all about what you think and how you feel about it. However, be prepared for the worst (always) and be prepared to debate and discuss in this board. This is how it works around here... it's up to YOU to take in the good and leave out the bad... you'll learn this laong the way.

The person I got my setup from had it shipped in from the island. They sell it in the local Lowes there where it's used to make concrete. It may have been dead when he got it but beleive me, it's full of all kinds of life now after 4 years. Congrats on getting a little something that most people don't have. And I'm sure there's something alive in the sand somewhere.

As someone from Hawaii pointed out. It's disrespectful of Hawaiian culture to take any part of the islands back home, sand, rocks or otherwise. It is silly to argue that taking one thing is okay, while another is not. I just don't appreciate it when people think they can go to Hawaii and take stuff. There's a reason the native Hawaiians dislike tourists. I don't like it when tourists continue to support the stereotype. Of course, I'm sure there's a small amount of sand in my bathing suit when I come home, but I don't intentionally bring large amounts of it home.
