I recently got a new fuge which I was going to put sand in.
My LFS convinced me that miracle mud was a better way to go for pod growth.
I added that and chaeto, and have been dosing kent marine phytoplex regularly.
I now have seen an increase in green algae on the glass (not coraline), which I need to scrub every 2-3 days.
Initially I suspected the phyto, but now I'm wondering if it's the miracle mud?

Is it better to just use live sand from an existing / old tank instead of miracle mud? Then infuse it with some pods etc... What do you think?

Mike

I have 30 lbs of miracle mud in my fuge. It seems that the pods like to live in it, so it does get aerated (if that is the correct word.) Whether or not it actually does anything - I have no scientific proof of either good or bad. Though I spend lots of time maintaining my tank, I have had very few of the issues that I read about on these forums. Again, that isn't exactly proof by any means. As for it being junk - this could be true. I have read many articles written by Mike Paletta which have stated that regardless of what the mud is made of, the ecosystem method seems to work rather well. Like everyone had stated, there is more than one way to gain success.

The success of the Ecosystem has more than likely more to do with the Macro Algae than the substrate used from all I have read the Miracle Mud is inert. I have had an Ecosystem tank setup for 6 years now and do not plan on changing the mud out. The tank does have a skimmer and has been extremely stable for the last year. We only have to clean the glass once a month and I am not willing to say that it is due the mud system and the corals mostly LPS and Softies are growing like crazy in fact many of them are need to be fragged. I know people that are not using the MM and are just as successful so why spend the money.

I am beginning to believe that the Miracle is that people will pay so much for it, me included.
