Huh

If something like that truly bothers an informed person such as yourself then IMO you have entirely to much time on your hands

Just my opinion

If you are ignorant and call a Hippo tang Dori, it irritates me knowing that they might choose to get one and we all know where a person who is a novice aquarist and a hippo tang end up.. Lol. If they are an experienced aquarist, wouldn't you think the name Nemo and Dori would get old after a while??

True.

I have seen so many Finding Nemo knick-knacks. Recently I saw a sprinkler for kids to run through and fruit snacks with Nemo on them.

First of all I want to say I loved finding nemo, and I started a tank after the movie, but it was becuase my brother had a tank. But what is sad is after the move, everyone wanted a "nemo" and had no idea and did no reaseach on how to keep a saltwater fish. And many died after that move, I even heard that a kid flushed his dads clown beucase he wanted to set him free.

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

I REALLY HATE IT when people call hippo tangs "dori" and clownfish "nemo". I think it is because everytime I am in a LFS I see some person, or people, who obviously don't know anything about saltwater fish saying I want a nemo, I want a nemo!!! AHHHRRRGGGG! It so annoying. Then you see them next week buying a fishbowl (for goldfish) and a clownfish, maybe not even realizing they need SW.

I guess it is a combination of me thinking that most people who call fish by these names don't know anything else about SW tanks, and the fact that I hear it ALL THE TIME! ITS JUST SO ANNOYING!

Is it wrong for me to assume they are ignorant when it comes to SW organisms, yeah, but its still annoying...

I said nemos to a guy I'm buddies with now at my lfs. He gave me a freaky look and I had to explain that I spend most of my tank talk with my girls.

I don't see how that has to do with having to much time on my hands, but yes, I do sometimes have to much time on my hands. Thats why I haunt reefcentral before the nightly backups!

Irritating at time none-the-less!
I feel that way too, the dont know the real names of the fish, they just know the names from the movie, and they look alike...

At least it brings more intrest in aquatic life to people.

anyone who would be bothered by this has a very aggressive personality. It should give you an opportunity to educate that person on the real name. Would it bother you if that movie never came out and the person walked past the fish and ignored it or just said hey look its a blue fish with a black stripe. No of course now...then why does this bother you? Very strange aggressive behaviour. I am starting to get concerned for you

It generally doesnt bother me, but I recently had a diving hoiday and the instuctors were telling some "one day divers" what they would see, including Nemo Fish!

Red Sea Anemone Fish arent even vaguely similar to Ocillaris or Percula.

That did annoy me.

I think that movie didn't do anything but promote people gettting into the hobby without proper research and understanding of the complex systems involved in maintaining a SW tank.

The vast majority of people I talk to who say they want a "nemo" fish don't care what I have to say. They just want a 10 gal tank with a "nemo" that they can put next to thier bed and throw flake food in every now and then. They don't care about the nitrogen cycle, or fish compatibility or what size tank is needed for what fish. Like I said, is it wrong to assume if someone calls a fish nemo that they don't know what they are doing and have no intention of learning anything about it, yes. Just from my experience, the majority don't.

Thats right it wouldn't bother me because they wouldn't be buying a fish that they knew nothing about, throwing it in a tank that is too small and may or may not contain SW, and end up killing it. I would rather someone who has no intention of learning anything never get into the hobby in the first place.

it doesn't bother me because to talk to people outside this hobby, u have to bridge the gap........if i start talkin about occellaris this and....(insert real fish name here)..... that, people lose interest right away........talking to people in terms they can understand is the key to getting your point across or at least carrying a conversation or educating somebody about this hobby.....

It doesn't really bother me because i have a little brother who is six and loved finding nemo and when all his little friends come over they start yelling nemo, nemo. So i'm use to it. What bothers me is when little kids start banging on the tank.

Yep...it definitely bugs me to the n'th degree. I know that they just say "Nemo" cause it's the first thing that pops into their heads, but seriously... Unless they're simply parents taking their kids to the LFS to see all the cool fish, or they're kids who don't know any better, it really bothers me. Anyone who's old enough to read can look at the sticker and realize what kind of fish they're looking at. Many fish have common names that people can correlate to the fish's appearance. It bothers me when someone calls a Clarkii a "Nemo". I know it's a clownfish, but c'mon... do these people even have eyes? Can they read? If they have any interest in the hobby whatsoever, LFS's need to make sure they educate these people on what it takes to care for these fish before selling to them.

Some people say "ignorance is bliss". Well... ignorance can also really p*ss people off. If you want to visit some fishies, go to the local aquarium or something.

I realize this position is harsh. But I cannot stand ignorant people. I'm not saying I've never been ignorant, but I usually keep my mouth shut or ask when I don't know what I'm talking about. "Nemo" and "Dori" are characters in a movie. Leave them at that.

One of my Nemos died during the Wilma fiasco. I've tried to add another Nemo on 2 seperate occasions but she ended up killing them. Our Dory is the only fish she tolerates in her space.

How long do Dory's live and will being in a smaller tank "stunt" their growth?

I don't mind people saying Nemo or Dori i say it a lot to my family (they dont know a lot about fish). I have my dads side of the family and they are all like six or younger so they usally say look its nemo, i tryed to tell them once what it was really called they corrected me and said NO its called nemo. My moms side of the family is all older than me and they just dont understand at all so when i tell them i got a new fish i say " i got a clownfish oh sorry nemo" or " I got another fish it lookes like nemo" if i dont say that and just say the name they look at me like i have three heads and then loose interest. My step dads family half is older and half are younger and they all just call it nemo. So i guess i dont mind but i think if you post or make a thread and ask a question if you want to be taken serily then you should at least say true percula clownfish or hippo tang.

Dr. Marini declared my A. dorehensis frogfishes the ugliest he's ever seen. So of course I had to name them Nemo and Dory, haha

So when I ask people if they want to see Nemo and Dory, this is what they see.

Dory

Nemo (pic taken when Uber had him)

And just for the heck of it... pic of ugly but cute pygmy frogfishes
