I also like the setup so far. Is there a certain reason why your using the drain filter? Unless you absolutely must have it than I would rather just forgo installing the filter as it is one less thing to maintain. If you are not able to tweak your durso too much I would adjust the output on your return pump as you may be able to quiet things this way... and you can always fix the durso later.

Only with a skimmer. LOL!! The Nanocubes have done weel for some time. They are not doing real well now and I think it's due to the heat. For the last week we have had a fan blowing on them to help a little. We can't wait for the move.

Thanks for the comment!

Yep, that's a pool table. Or a laundry folding table is more like it. We have not removed the cover in a couple of years. But, when we do I will put something in front of the tank to protect it.

I think the Durso will work fine. It' amazing how well just a small hole helped. I may eventually remove the filter. After I put a cover on the overflow box then there is no worry of a snail or a fish clogging it. I told the wife the other day we need to make sure we don't buy anything smaller then the slots on the overflow. lol!

Honey, have you seen the neon goby and why is the wood floor all wet?

Any idea who makes a decent ro/di unit for my 50g tank?

Update: The drain up at the top is quite but, the noise in the drain pipe with all the air mixed in with it makes a lot of noise. Now that I've had a few days to sit next to it and listen I decided it's too loud. I know it's due to all the air.......I'm lost and don't know what to do. I guess 2 90 degree elbows didn't help. See pics in first post.

I do have a small hole at the top. I started very small and worked up in size until the water maintained a stable water level. It does not make much noise up the the top now. It's the air that's sucked into that small hole that's causing all the noise in the drain. I think the hole is about .076" in diamater.

NCreefwannabe, drilling a hole in a drain pipe above the water line draws air in, not out. The draining water creates a vaccuum effect.

speedracer68, if you're hearing the whoosh of air from that hole, using a length of tubing may help diffuse that sound. At least you can place the open end of the tubing where the sound won't echo. I drilled a hole nearly the size of the tubing and forced it in so friction would hold it in place. A cheapo plastic air valve at the end lets you adjust it for optimum flow. Just like mgk65 mentioned.

The little hole does not make that much noise. In fact with the canopy and the glass lid on it I can't hear it. All the noise is emanating from the drain plumbing in the cabinet.

o.k.. I removed the two 90 degree elbows and replaced them with a pair of 45's and a piece of clear hose over the pvc elbows. WOW! The noise level dropped to almost nothing.

Now, It's time to list those Rio's you all told me not to buy on E-bay. I think I might go with a Mag 9.5 or something like that.

Thanks again everyone for all the help. I think this thread is done.

We now return you to your previous post.

Larry

Thanks. The standpipe worked great - I used a piece from my toasted protein skimmer.

pnosko, did you also put a 90 elbow on the bottom of your return line in your sump? I just set-up a perfecto 125 reef with 2 overflows and I cant seem to get read of the gurgling (air in the pipe taken down into the sump) noise.

I'm going to try the air valve thing that mgk65 mentioned in your previous post but would also like to know if the 90 elbow helped?

Thanks
Dave

I had one 90 at the end of flexible PVC taking it near horizontal, and then another 90 taking it back vertical into the sump. But I don't believe I did this because of noise.

Well, thanks everyone for your help. Our tank has been up for 7 months now and it's going well. I've added a Tunze auto topoff, a bunch of mushrooms, zoo's, leathers, polyps, clean up crew and a few fish. I guess the only thing that's bothering me is my skimmer. It won't run more then 2-3 days without having to clean it. It gets about 1/8 full and quits. Is this normal? It's a Euroreef CS80.

Thanks again and check out the latest pic at
