Its called DEMAND--this is a fairly rare fish that you wont see in the US very often...those that can afford 1K for a fish can afford 3k and if they want it they are usually more than willing to pay it-----if you were a vendor and knew you could get 3K why would you only charge 1K? that would be stupidity at its finest....also...i would undoubtedly pay this if i could but as I am just getting out of school and going back to law school dont think this would be in my budget...but one day I would pay it....

Its so you can say look at this beautiful, fairly rare fish THAT I HAVE AND YOU DONT...thats all...but you cant doubt its a beautiful specimen

From one of the sites:

Rare, but worth the price when available.
Worth the price? Unless the little sucker can climb out of the tank and get his own paper route, I don't think so!

I agree, what a lot of money for a fish that isn't even that easy on the eyes... It's not spectacular by ANY means

I am not saying that those who can afford it shouldn't buy these, it was just a shock to see how expensive they really are. I have alot of money for certain fish, watanabei angel pair, but this is like sticker shock on a car. Even my angel pair was less than $300 with shipping.

I had a supplier offer them to me not too long ago and I was very interested until he told me the cost (which was reasonable based on what I see them retailing for.) I told him that I'd never be able to sell it even if I offered it at cost. He told me to put one in my display tank and it would sell the others. I told him if I had that fish in my display and something happened to it I'd throwing corals on the floor in order to catch/rescue it. The way I look at it is that you shouldn't get anything you can't afford to loose. It's bad enough when things go south and you have something die, it'd be a lot worse if it had a huge price tag associated with it. Something I always think about in regards to the price of fish is that it will die, one day.

I think gem tangs look pretty good. Jewels look pretty awful.

I'm not sure I'd pay that much, but if you like it ......

This is my opinion, and mine only. There are alot of people who pay crazy amounts of money for stuff that I never would. This fish is one of those things. I personally don't think it's anything that special to look at, and wouldn't feel the need to have one even if I had the money to do it. But as long as they aren't endangered, then whatever floats your boat.

You know I think $3K for a fish is'nt unreasonable. For this particular one though I do!
Its really not a spectacular looking fish IMO. Now a collector looking for something nobody else has maybe?
I am big into KOI so $3K really is'nt a big deal for a fish, but then again KOI can live for a really long time, and they are basically a man made fish, anotherwords manipulated by selective breeding to get the best looking fish, wheras a wild tang looks the same as all of its brothers and sisters. Its funny how the two hobbies are so similiar yet so very different.
Anyone else notice this?
Chris

I would buy one for sure if I had the extra $$$$. When you've been in the hobby as long as I have you appreciate the rare & unusual stuff more. I guess it's an acquired taste.

I have been looking for the Zebrasoma gemmatum for many years. Typically they are available sometimes in Germany for 600-1000 euro depending on size.

Now for some reason in the beginning of July 2006 they appeared in numbers. I looked at stocklists from several European suppliers and quite a few had more than 10 Z. gemmatum at the time. Needless to say they were gone next week.

I had understood that there are not more than one, perhaps two collector of this fish. But does anyone know if the collector(s) has found a new collecting area?? Will price drop and availability rise?

I'm more into reasonably priced, pretty fish than outrageously priced average looking fish. Powder Blues, Achilles, Purples, Sohals and Sailfins are all much prettier than the Gem Tang to me. To each his own though, if someone has the money for that and wants, go for it.
