I made a venturi which really seemed to increase both the air and the water output of the pump (given it's not nearly as restrictive now) Working better, though the flow rate is now a little too much for the skimmer. Even with the valve full open, my water level is too high in the skimmer and I am skimming super wet. Any ideas on this? What are the thoughts about putting a valve on the intake and turning the flow back a bit?

I soon will be posting in this thread a lot more. I placed an order through aquatraders.com for the PS75 skimmer, and lights. (just PC, no MH, heard bad about their MH, but also heard it was fixed in their new runs, but ehh, why mess around with fire...)

Great to hear! For the price, I think I will be going with them for my MH answer as well. But I don't plan to upgrade from the PCs until I get a new tank, and not getting a new tank until I get into a different place. I picked up the 4x65 PC 48" rig. I will let everyone know how it turns out, as well as the skimmer, over flow, and return pump I picked up from there... |

If you look at there odyssea lighting thread you'll see that nearly everyone who has purchsed them has changed out the MH ballasts. There pc's are doing fine, but there MH's still have problems.

I will do a search for it, because I should keep my lighting talk out of the skimmer thread...
Too bad about the MH's though..... |

I emailed aquatraders many times but no responce from them. However I kept reading about people who bought through them so I figured I would give it a go, and they emailed me yesterday to say my shipment went out.

Now we're getting somewhere. I made a new intake for the pump an just before the impeller, I made 5 venturis in a circle around the pipe. Very similar to the one in the Via Aqua skimmer club thread a few pages back. Now we're pullin' scum baby! Have to tweak the output valve a bit yet, but progress.
One complaint with the PS160 is the stupid valve on the output. It's super hard to adjust. It would be much easier to tweak if there were a larger knob on it... or better yet a gate valve. -J

well crap... indeed I am a liar. I swore I saw that venturi in the ViaAqua club thread. I'll never find a pic now.
Basically it is a piece of pvc with 5 barbs around the pipe instead of 1. -J

Mia, i understand you think its going to pull more air this way but its not. It will slow down your flow but your air is going to be the same as one 1/4" venturi. Basically it pulls less air from each venturi as the flow is lower, but when the flow is higher it pulls more air. Make sense. An example would be i have a 3/4" male fitting on the end of my pump with a 1/4" venturi hose at the end of the threads. Its pulling 15scfh but if i add a 1/2" pvc right before the venturi it'll make the air go up as the flow is in a tight squeeze and its flowing very fast so when it hits the venturi it pulls alot more air. If it stays without the 1/2" pvc it'll be using the normal flow.

I did try the same setup before with 1-3 venturis instead of 5, and it seemed like I was getting entirely too much flow. Even with the output open all the way, the neck would quickly overflow. I'll need to play around with some other venturi setups. When you say 1/4" for the air inlet are you talking od or id?
