Is it worth my time to plumb from the overflow instead of using a mag 5? I am happy with the mag but I have 2 overflows and figured I could use 1 and eliminate a pump.

Here is the gate valve mod. The piece that connects to the union is metric, I turned one end down to fit 1.5". Everything on the top side of the valve is 1.5"http://

They are on the slow boat from China. CoralVue should have them at the end of this month.

I have a 45 elbow half submerged, that's also silent.
No problem with bubbles, the skimmer dumps to the opposite end of the sump from the return pump. For what it's worth, or if it makes a difference, I am feeding the skimmer from one of the overflows.

I have noticed that for best performance cleaning is required every 3 days at the latest. At the 1 week mark the skimmer performance dropped significantly.
Of course cleaning every day has yielded the best results. |

I agree on the cleaning. It seems to drop after a few days. Every couple of weeks I shut off the pumps and take the entire neck off. Every 4-5 days I shutoff the air and wipe the inside of the neck with a paper towel.
Where's the auto-cleaner?

Where do you guys recommend keeping the water level in the skimmer with the pump running and the air shut off for the best performance from the skimmer?
I also noticed that after a cleaning, it takes upto a day to start producing skimmate again and after a feeding, it takes upto 4 hours to start producing skimmate. |

Mine resumes right away after cleaning ... has the foam head rebuilt within 15-30 minutes, and skims like crazy! Here is the link to the new skimmer: http://swfmas.com/node/228 |
