It was a bit of a pain for me, you have to take out the divider that is there for the sponge, be careful as I tore a hole in the plastic divider to the dt when I did it.

who else has the Biocube 8 gal? I would love to see them, and what mods to it did you do? I have a stock 8gal, I need to buy the lights as all I have working are the moonlights. I have it setup right now as a QT. I want to turn it into a softy tank. Thanks for any input.

hahaha true. Looks sweet.
I just use a clear storage container that holds about ~4 gallons. Lasts about ~8 days. |

BioCubes don't make bad frag tanks. I have a 14g that is currently serving zoanthid frag duty. I have a split single layer rack with a large handful of frags on discs sitting on them. It's nice becuse it's semi-stable and self contained.

Hi everyone, entering the addiction with a BC29. Slowly gathering what I'll need to get going. Rock is on order.. will keep you posted.
Plans: Get it running, perc or occ to start, some zoas/softies, and anemone... (gbta or rbta)... |

Hi, I think this is the right thread to ask (rather than start a new one). I just filled up my BC29 with tap water to leak test last night, and followed the instructions that came with it: filled it to the bottom of the top plastic molding on the tank, then turned the pump on.
But the water level in chamber 3 didn't drop down to be between the min/max window... it's about 1/4" of the way down from top of that chamber, and above this window. Did I put too much water in? Does this matter? I assume it's important to mark the water level with it running so I can top off with RODI after some evaporates... just want to make sure the water level is in a good spot before marking it. |

The min and max markings are meaningless. As long as there's enough water in chamber 3 to prevent the return pump from sucking in air, you're fine. On the flip side, the chamber can be filled all the way to the top without issue. I think they recommend the level be in that zone to allow the water to free fall through the bio balls in chamber 2. As you've probably read, bio balls are worthless and collect debris. Ditch them and increase your water capacity.
Use the little window to help you judge how much top-off water to add. Fill it to the top of the window, then track how long it takes to evaporate down to the min line. 3 days. 5 days. 7 days. Whatever. Then refill with distilled water until you're at the top of the window again. If you find that this much fluctuation affects salinity too much (no clue if there'd be any measurable swing at all), then make a mark on the window 2 inches from the top and use that as your max. |

Ditto. I don't even use the windows. I'll fill my BC 14 to about 1/2 - 1" below the top and keep it in that range. If I hear a waterfall, I know its time to top off again.

Already ditched and I'm UPS-tracking the ordered media baskets. Thanks for the replies... I was worried that maybe my stock pump is defective and wasn't pumping as fast as it should to lower the water in chamber 3 to be within the window. After all the initial purchases and while I'm waiting for the cycle to complete, I'll research upgrading the pump and powerheads. |
