Hi There!
Hi my name is Torsten (37 Years old) and I'm new here.
I come from Germany but I live and work here in Michigan. It was always my dream to get into this hobby and 2010 my wife (Janka, from Slovakia, 31 years old) and me decided to start first with a Biocube 29. Before I read a German book about setting up a reef tank and I couldn't wait. Later in 2010 we started also a 50 Gallon AGA Tank, which was sold to me through Craig's list as a 75 Gallon Acrylic Tank. Well, in Europe we have Liter and Centimeter instead of inch/ft so I didn't know what size the tank was. When I tried to buff out the scratches I knew it was glass and not Acrylic Anyway, I learned a lot in the last years, also how to be disappointed by my own mistakes. Well, I think now I'm ready for the next tank! We are planning! My wife and me are crazy about Corals and Fishes! WE LOVE IT! We spend every day hours together only for our Reef tanks! Here the latest pictures of my 50 Gallon Tank. |

Hope this is the right place to introduce myself.
Hello everyone.
I'm basically starting over in the reef tank hobby. I started out around 13 years ago with a 30 gal fish only tank. That grew to a 40 gal, then 55 reef, to 75 to 90 gal which is my present tank. A few years ago we had a bad storm and I lost power for several days. I had no generator so I pretty much lost everything. Basically I had water and rock tank since then. About 4 or 5 months ago I decided to try to get things going again. I bought two clowns, a yellow tang and a scooter blenny. The tang and blenny didn't last very long. In the meantime I had decided to build a "Man Cave/Theater Room" down in my basement. Part of the plan was to move the 90 gal tank down there and build it into the wall. When I moved the tank I took the opportunity to really change things. All the rock is now been moved away from the back of the tank so that the water has better movement. I'm waiting to make sure that I have the water quality consistant before I throw any more money into more fish or corals. That's my story and I look forward to learning and sharing with all of you here. |

Hello fellow reefers!
Hey everyone! I've been following along on this site for a while now. Think it's about time I try to get involved a little more in the community I spend so much time in lol.
Anyway couldn't remember if I ever introduced myself. My name's Josh I'm 25, have lived in Key West for about 7 years now. Married(Ashley) with one beautiful daughter Arylana. I dive for tropical fish, invert's, corals ect. here in the florida keys for a living. We also have a small scale open ocean frag operation we recently set up. Should grow close to 5,000 frags at a time.... We're trying to fix a few of our favorite dive spots that were bleached out from a cold spell we had down here last year. If anyone needs anything Caribbean let me know and send me something to trade, anyone collect near Catalina? ; ) j/k Current DT is a Hex tank, 75 gallons. I've made everything for the tank from scratch( PVC overflow, sump, ect). Planning on building a skimmer and LED light system over the next couple months. My first attempt at a diy skimmer didn't go very well, if anyone has any recommendations??(PM me) Tank has been running for 8 months now. I'll do a separate post with specs. Thank you to all the members here, that have provided me with everything I needed to know to keep a reef successfully in our living room! |

New to saltwater
Sorry but this is long winded.
Hi my name is Klayton I'm 24 I live in Lynchburg, VA I have my B.S. in Physics and I work for a nano tech company out of Roanoke, VA and I've been keeping freshwater fish for 12 years, I currently have 2-29 gallon fresh water tanks and a 20 gallon aquascaped hospital/quarantine/refugium/sump for both 29 gal tanks. One is stocked with an 8 inch Featherfin Synodontis, who is my pride and joy and just turned 9, and 6 black ruby barbs as mates. A guy at my dad's work managed to breed his pair of featherfins and I got mine as a fry from him so that's how I know he is 9. My other 29 gallon tank is stocked with 2 adult (f) mollies, 2 adult (f) blue gourami, 13 baby mollies, 9 are 1 month old 4 are 2 weeks old and all have yet to be sexed, and 4 ghost shrimp. The 20 gallon is a heavily planted and aquascaped tank that is hooked up to both 29 gallon tanks via custom made hob overflows w/ durso standpipes. On both inlets to the refugium and both outlets there are 36 watt uv sterilizers. This ensures that nothing harmful comes into the refugium and none of the algae from the tank or disease from a quarantined fish comes out of the refugium. I've been told this is overkill before but I believe in quarantined environments and this ensures that. With this setup all of my fish are happy and the only fish that have died died at the end of their expected life cycle. Anyways, the reason I'm here is because I was at my LFS, let me say I've seen corals before but they'd never caught my eye, and he had received a shipment of blueberry Gorgonians and when I saw them they took my breath away. The most beautiful coral I've ever seen. So now I've been infected with saltwater fever and I'm here to learn as much as possible about how I need to set my tank up to house those blueberry beauties. It killed me when researching them that they are some of the hardest corals to keep but this only makes me more determined to have them. I plan that within a year of my SW tank being set up that I will get a small blueberry to get acclimated to caring for a NPC and to make sure I don't blow $400 on something my tank won't keep alive. What I plan on having: A 50 gallon custom made tank that is of radical design to be viewed from 360 degrees. It will be 6-5 gallon acrylic spheres and 1-20 gallon acrylic sphere interconnected by 3 inch diameter clear acrylic pipes. Since the acrylic is going to be structural it will be 1" acrylic. The 5 gallon tanks will be in the shape of a large diameter hexagon and from these 6 the supports for the 20 gallon sphere which will be raised in the middle will slant upwards. Where each of the pipes connects to a sphere there will be a shut off valve that will allow for periodic cleaning/fragging of each individual sphere/coral through a 6" diameter cap on top of each of the 5 gallon spheres and a 12" diameter cap on the 20 gallon sphere while not having to shut the whole system down except when cleaning the 20 gal sphere. Each of the 5 gal spheres will house an individual aquascaped coral species that will highlight that particular coral and the 20 gallon sphere in the middle will house the blueberry gorgonian. For filtration, the 5 gallon spheres will all run to a center 1/2 sphere that serves as support for the 20 gal tank and has a pipe the runs straight down into the stand that goes through a wet/dry filter to a 50 gallon aquascaped refugium/sump/quarantine that will house the heaters, and if need be a chiller, and will be connected to a Cal reactor and protein skimmer and return pump. The refugium/sump will be visible through a cut out in the stand but everything else will be hidden. In total the tank will have over 120 gallons of volume which should make it easier to maintain. Water circulation doesn't need pumps, except for the return, because it will be gravity fed and to control this the pipe running down will have a flow adjustment valve to tweak things so the corals aren't damaged from the rapid flow of water that would result w/ unrestricted flow. The lighting is what I'm having trouble deciding on. The guy who I'm going to have it manufactured through thinks we should put it in the caps but I don't want visible wires. I'm considering having a suspended light canopy that will focus a beam on each of the spheres and the particular coral species. Any ideas here would be appreciated. My questions are: How different is keeping a SW tank over a FW? Keep in mind I test my tank parameters: KH, GH, PH, NH3/NH4, NO2-, NO3, CO2, and salinity b/c I run mine slightly brackish on my FW tanks every day and log them in an excel sheet on a dedicated computer that sits near my tank. This sheet also has the weights of each type of food I feed my fish and the volume of supplements, i.e salt, water conditioner, NaHCO3, etc. This lets me see exactly what affects my tank and how. Should I start with a conventional tank to get used to keeping a reef? I figure with how I keep my FW tank is probably more intensive than most people keep their SW tanks so I might be able to skip this learning curve. Is there anything else I need to know about keeping a SW aquarium? I do intensive research on a topic before I make an endeavor into it so i believe I'm well suited to start a SW tank. Any feedback or ideas on my custom tank?

Man all the technical info gets a little overwhelming, live sand ok... i used sand in one of my freshwater tanks awhile ago but i found the poop suctioning was somewhat a pain cuz the sand always wanted to come up too... i have a big 4ft tank that has everything for freshwater set up but i want to try saltwater... i want it set up in a way that is easy enough to maintain, basically as self sufficient as it can be, but i have no idea what i need to get, it has a thermostat, a heater, lights, and filter... but i know that saltwater needs a lot more, and all the shortforms really mystify me... HELP!!!

Hello everybody. My name is Ricky. Im 26 years young and I live in Jacksonville, Florida. Been here my whole life I love the weather here. I have been "researching" on SW aquariums for about a month now reading about them everyday. As of right now I have not even a tank. I'm in no rush and want to take my time and do it right. I'm probably buying a 105 gallon drilled with dual corner overflows from a friend next week. I want to do a reef tank with a few fish (my gf want the "pretty" fish haha) I'm open to all ideas. The guy I'm buying from owns his own store so he is giving me really good deals on water, equipment, rock ect. The tank has t5 lights and a sump (not sure how big I'm going to look at the tank very soon) I haven't even put a dent on learning about these yet but maybe you guys can give me some awesome ideas! Thanks in advance!!

Hello all,
My name is Kevin and I have been a reefer for 10+ years. I am from the omaha area living closer to blair than omaha. I have a 125 Gallon mixed reef that is currently managing itself. I do water changes maybe once a month simply for peace of mind. I'm using a Halide PC combo light that has been very reliable and performs very well for my corals. My whole mission in the hobby is to create a self sustainable system that has very little impact if any on the natural reefs in the oceans. I make all of my own liverock and grow all of my own corals out of frags recieved from others. My clownfish have been mating for three years and I could use some help in raising the fry. Other than that I would like to extend my knowledge to all in need of assistance. Thanks for the Welcome, Fistandantilus(Kevin) |

Good morning!!
Hey all, my name is Roger, I live in Orange Park Fl. I am re-establishing my aquarium after moving into my home 7 years ago...I figured 7 years sitting empty in the garage is long enough...before that my tank housed large Lionfish, Banded Cat Shark and Grey Reef sharks...miss those guys!
Mine is a 125 gallon Acrylic tank...will be setting up with a saltwater reef system and am just now at the point where I am adding live rock... So thanks in advance for all the help I hope to recieve from the many dumb questions I expect to post!! |
