well, I'm not a reefer..yet...but I'll keep it up

WOOHOO!!! Drivers and last 10 LEDs came in today

time for an update picture

Some food for thought. Fluorescent lights are not on 100% of the time. They flicker at a high rate. this means that if you had an LED and a flourescent light putting out the same visible amount of light, the LED is really putting out more! How much more is dependent on how long the Fluorescent light is OFF for between pulses. Plants see # of photons at a given wave length, NOT the apparent intensity.

Top picture is the 7100k Azoo palm light.
Bottom picture is 7x 1watt Luxeon stars driven at 350ma.
All camera conditions are the same for both pictures

That luxeon spectrum is pretty sweet. Where do you buy Lumileds LEDs on the commercial market?

they appear close to 5000-6000k range...but they have different binnings for that. I think some are around 8000+K I am not sure where you will find a dealer that will sell them binned though.

http://www.luxeonstar.com is one source (no binning but they sell drivers)
http://www.quickar.com/lux.php?session=tRuqC8MJ (some binning..not sure about drivers)

gomer what are we looking at in these green pics? I've been looking at them and they are blended in and make no distingushavle comparison to me. I'm a simple person so I could be wrong. Could you explain them to me and how they relate to the reef?

Thanks
Eric

it isn't a reef at all *L* It is my FW baby shrimp tank. There is a little green plant that is starting to grow out there. The rocks have some light green algae on them.

They are not blended, but rather have a shallow depth of field. What is there isn't important. What is is the relative color and light intensity differences to the Azoo PC light.

Looking at luxeon leds. The star III can produce 60 lumens and maintain 70% lumen maintenance @ 50,000 hours. That's 17 years at 8 hours a day.

@ 80 lumens it can maintain 50% lumen maintenance @20,000 hours.

http://www.luxeonstar.com/item.php?...artno=LXHL-LW3C

For 10,000 lumens you would need 125 bulbs and the cost would be $1875 and watts would be 500. Where close to metal halide here. No bulb changes for 17 years = $1020-$2000 bucks

I would be willing to bet with lexeon's it would be incredibly bright with 125 of them. There is one concern here and that's the lack of spectrum from 450-520nm

wait, if you're looking at the luxeon III, you would have to drive each one at 4W to achieve 80 lumens, while the regular luxeons are 1W to drive 25 lumens. it seems to me that you're better off in the long-term to buy the 1W luxeons as opposed to the 4W ones in energy terms.

well, pretty soon (read: some time next week) I hope to have a comparison on visual intensity of 24x 1watt luxeons vs 1x36watt AHSupply.
While not 24 is not 125, you should be able to get a reasonable idea ...well..I could do the 24 light rig AND the 7 at the same time

sandisct,
What do you have the led's In? It looks you have some kind of array or something... What im looking for is some kind of board i can make so i dont have to run a wire to each led...

niko5 - i think it is called a veroboard.... where there's roll of copper strip behind with lots of holes on it.... do a search and you'll find it

or you can always get the metal-free variety and use stick-on copper strips to wire it all together.

mmmm . . . flux

Where's the cheapest place to get luxeons? Since I'm going to be using them as spotlights the III's are best price/performance. Would like the 5 watter but cost is up there.

the 5 watters are not good in white. I'd get the 1 or 3's...get the Star/o (comes with 10° colimating optics)....but I am not sure if they apply to the 1 watt only

there is no cheap place...the price is almost univeral. Perhaps the second link might be a tad cheaper...they sell heat sinks too for the LED. How do you plan on driving them?

Thanks Gomer. I did not really understand what they meant by
"bat wing", "lambertian", "side emitting" (although this one sounds self explanatory). So the O's have a 10deg spread .

I have a number of power supply's but will probally run them off of 5v with current limiting resister. I was going to hook them on the end of some sort of snake that I can reposition. Don't believe they will be hooked in series, if so I could probally run 3 of them off of 12volts. I need to study the data sheet on that aspect though. I will probally order some on monday. Pic's later in the week.

I read about the different distribution patterns of the luxeons. I found this beam spread formula on the net. 12" should yeald 2.16 beam spread. Here's the formula.

Code:
                                                              . Â

Oops

BEAM WIDTH = ANGLE x .018 x DISTANCE,

I haven't read everything, but has anyone considered using the grating that they put under FL lighting? It has about 1/4 to 1/2 in squares the LEDs could be put into, moved around at will and possibly solidly mounted with silicone finally. This is neat work! I wish y'll a lot of luck!

so far i've wired up about 150 LEDs from besthongkong.com, and it's helped to boost my tank. though the white LEDs are a little in the yellow range, and the blues aren't quite bright enough to counter the whites. in any case, it's a supplement to my cf lights, and i get a pretty groovy effect with the moonlight.

i think the fan i bought is sucking down more current than the 0.5A rating, though.

I have some solux 4700k halogen bulbs coming for spotlights in addition to my 20kk xm bulb. So am going to hold off on getting some luxeons until next month. But will show pics of them when I get them hooked up.

Hi;
Sorry to jump in....but a while back someone said that green plants require ~650-700 nm. Since red LEDs are efficient and cheap, might this be a good lighting for phytoplankton production?

how is there any mountain bikers out there? NiteRider makes hid bike lamps that are super bright metal halides. i think it would be cool to get like 25 of these above a tank.. you could really work the sunrise/sunset cycle with something like this.. but their pricetag is kinda a killer...
