The big factor comes in when they use specific color LED's. When you put in a blue LED you get strictly blue light from it not a wide spectrum blue like you get from a B+ T-5 Bulb. The other big issue is that it extremly difficult to produce a LED that is effecient in the 480 to 520 nm range. Since there little demand for LED's in this range few major LED manufacturers put much effort into it. Therefore I like to combine B+ T-5's with the LED's to get the best of both worlds.

Hi Dennis,
I have recently bought a brand new Powermodule (8 X 39W) and use the following tubes: 5 X ATI Blue + and 3 X ATI Coral +, i.e. front blue + blue + coral + blue + coral + blue + coral + blue + back You kindly provided me with a spectrum chart for my previous tube combination (3 X ATI Blue + and 3 X Coral +) in the past. I wonder if you could possibly provide me with another spectrum chart for my new tube combination please. My corals look OK, but purples and pinks do not look vivid under this combination. In this context, I am wondering whether it would be OK if I replaced one of the C+s with a Aquablue special or purple +, i.e. front blue + blue + coral + blue + abs/purple+ blue + coral + blue + back Happy new year

6x24 or 8x24 for 60 gal cube?
For a new 60 gallon cube (24x24x24) I'm leaning towards an ATI Sunpower 6x24 or 8x24. It will be an LPS-dominated mixed reef, so some SPS, etc. Are 6 bulbs enough or would 8 bulbs be better for more options, or would 8 be too much?
Thanks. |

T5 bulbs recommendation
I SO appreciate having someone guiding me with this!
I am planning a 75 gallon with softies, anemones, clowns, probably some lps and possibly some sps in the future. I have a used Nova Extreme Pro 6 bulb fixture that needs replacement bulbs. I have an Orbit Current 48" fixture as well. What replacement bulbs do you recommend? Can I use the LED fixture, too? |

On my 120 gallon thank I had the best results with color and coral growth using an 8 bulb fixture using the following combination Front 1 ATI Blue Plus 2 ATI Purple Plus 3 ATI Blue Plus 4 GE 6,500K 5 ATI Blue Plus 6 ATI Purple Plus 7 ATI Blue Plus 8 ATI Blue Plus Rear On my smaller Tanks with only 6 bulbs I found That using T-t bulbs I also got fantastic Results using the following: Front 1 Gman Aquablue Azure 2 Gman Aquablue Coral 3 Gman Tropical 4 Gman Atinic Blue 5 Gman Super Purple 6 Gman Aquablue Coral Rear With my combination LED- T-5's I originally used only ATI Blue Plus to suplement the LED's but have switched to the GMAN AquaBlue Azure when mixed with LED's at a ratio of 3 Royal Blue (454nm) to 1 Neutral White (4,500K).

I have an ATI Sunpower with 6 bulbs (48") on a 110 gallon, fish only tank. My bulbs are 3 blue+ (ATI), 1 purple+ (ATI), 1 coral+ (ATI), and a midday (6000K Geisemann).
My light fixture has two channels, with two bulbs on one channel and 4 bulbs on the other. I am thinking of using the following bulb combination and schedule: 1. Lights on at 7:30 am with the 2-bulb channel: 1 blue+ and 1 coral+ for 3.5 hours. 2. At 11 am, switching to the 4-bulb channel - 2 blue+, 1 purple+, and 1 white for 7 hours. The 2 channel bulbs will be off. 3. At 6 pm, back to the 2-bulb channel until 9:30 pm. The 4-channel bulbs will be off. Do you think this is a good setup to start with or is there a better combination of bulbs? This is a fish only tank and my only plants are algae that has cropped up the past 6 months (tank has been up 4 years) so I have been turning off all light for 4 hours during the middle of the day.

thinking about getting back to T5. I'm currently running 2 Radions gen 1, and not very happy with the light. My tank dimension is 48x24x20h. How many bulbs should I get and what is the current top T5 light?

I would say an 8 bulb unit, as would most I believe. 48" length, although you may get by with a 36" fixture if you like low light corals as well. Can't beat ati for t5 fixtures.

Here is an interesting tidbit I found. I have been using a Actinic bulb for a while now and have seen a positive effect in coloration and growth has been very good. I originally replaced a blue plus with an actinic because I found that the "best growth" metal halides, usually had a very large peak at 420nm and not much at 450-470 where our blue bulbs peak.
Anyway, the common thought is that the actinic bulbs are only for color, and have no usefulness for growth, especially because they put out comparatively low par. I then found this: From an old review article, note the low par of the actinic bulb in relation to the others. They also tested PUR(which is Photosynthetically Usable Radiation) and which may be a better piece of data than PAR. For the same three bulbs, it is very interesting: Perhaps a bit more 420nm light is indeed useful...
