I got 'em all hung and lit up. I still don't have any corals yet, but first things first.

Top picture is with 2 coralife 4x65watt pc's. Each has 2 10k's and 2 actinic 03's. Totalling 520watts. They were placed 1.5" off the water, due to broken legs.

Bottom picture is with 3 LB's 250watt 12k reeflux. Picture was taken at initial startup with no burn in at all.

Quite a difference in coloration. Also, the pc's were staggered and older bulbs.

"Lumenbrights" are reflectors. Are you talking about the ballasts when you say you have "the switch on max"? If you turn them off, the bulb has to cool down for 10 to 15 minutes before it will restart.

Double check that you have power where the ballast is plugged in. A tripped circuit, a tripped 6-way powerstrip, even the switch turned to the off position on a timer could all be throwing you off. Always check the basics.

i have my reflector glass 9 inches from the water surface...i have reeflux 12k 250 bulbs....is this too close?

One thing i have noticed....very little heat transfer to the water compared to my 4x250 aquamedics de's

so far very happy with them

Yes, they need to move up least 3 more inches. Mine (the glass) are 14" off the water, 18" from the bulb to the water.

With any luck I will be joining the crew soon! Plan is 3 x Laser beams, some old street lighting ballasts I found in a junk pile (some research has found these to be 250W HQI ballasts, which all tested out to work fine).

I will be using 14K $20 HQI SE lamps from ebay. My theory is that with the lumenbrights, the cheap lamps will punch way more par into my tank than expensive lamps using a lessor reflector, specially considering I can change them much more often. I am currently running 3 x 150 ebay lamps and the light looks great but its not strong enough.

Thoughts?

Also I worked out that 7.2 hours of runtime with the 250s will equal the same power consumption as 12 hours with the 150s.

Will 7.2 hours be enough?

Assuming the ebay bulbs are good, 6 hours per bulb is plenty per day. That is all mine run and my tank has been doing great as far as I can tell.*

*Since I'm always doing something, an issue appears here or there, but nothing that I could attribute to a lighting issue.

With 3 stacked up on each other assuming you have a 5ft 150g tank, you are ok as far as spread. 9" is just way too low for LumenBrights. They are too strong to do this without a PAR meter. At minimum if you have a 5ft tank I would say 12" with 250's - 14" is pushing it with 400's. Any lower and you are talking about some serious acclimation especially with particular coral.

I talk and write about acclimation as if I really like it. I can't stand it. I am just like everyone else. I would love to just place a coral wherever I wish. I have had a hard enough time acclimating coral to 2 - 400w bulbs at 17.5" from bulb to water on a 5 ft tank. Changing to 3- 250's at 15" will take less acclimation which I am happy about But with LumenBrights there still is an acclimation process. I would be in the same boat if I were stacked up at 12" and it would be a nightmare if I had to acclimate at 9"

Example - a friend gave me a beautiful blue gomezi for almost nothing. I was very excited about it and had it at around 250 on the bottom for 3 weeks. I was just about to change over to 250's and decided to move it to a spot at 350 thinking it is just one day. Well the next day I get home and I have 5 tips that are white. Fried the tips on this gomezi and faded it enough to disappoint in just a matter of hours and these were 2 - 400w bulbs at 17.5" from the water. I immediately moved it back to the spot where it was glowing blue and happy. It has held on but the tips are a bit whiter. So think about this - I moved a coral acclimated for 3 weeks at 250 and I move it to 350 and in just a few hours it was taking a turn for the worse. We are talking about a very sensitive coral, one I have not had much luck with. In fact I don't think I have ever seen a gomezi bigger than a few inches. I guess this is the extreme and many of your coral will acclimate just fine. But when you think about it, did you stunt there growth because they had to get used to such powerful light that they were not used to before? They may make it out just fine but you could have crippled your coral.

I was at 17.5" , can you imagine if I was at 14.5"? I would have done more than just fry the tips. If you have room to raise them a few inches I would. If you keep them that low with 4 - T5's, be careful...

Those chains are going to outlive those tiny threads on the eye bolts.

As long as those bolts hold, we are both safe. I tend to wonder about that connection, but I don't think about it TOO much, if you know what I mean.

I mounted screws up through the reflector into the wood support and had trouble sleeping, so the next day I went and got bolts with washers and wingnuts to hold it securely. Now I sleep very well...

except for the dreams of a tank blowout. LMAO

That looks like a lot more than 9" from the bulb to the water. Did you raise them up? Looking good. I think I am going to need a mini pendant for the 30g cube I plumbed in over the weekend.

i did raise them up......I knew i had to.....When i first mounted them I thought for sure they were above 12 inches

They are now at 12 inches from water to glass......

I again would like to thank Mike at Reefspecialty.com for helping me out with my questions and providing great overall support

So then you are about 15"-16". Nice. You could if you wanted go am inch or two lower. You will just have to see what works out best. Are you putting up the 4 T5's too?

You could get rid of all that stuff behind and on top of the lights by mounting them directly to the ceiling with swag hooks held by toggle bolts.
