Could anyone who purchased their cherry wood stands share some pictures of their stand for me? Also, their basic stand (MDF)? I'm really having a hard time deciding which direction I want to go.

are you looking for the color tone or of the build? I have the all wood stand but not in cherry.

I have the cherry stand. Looks just like on the website. One thing my wife doesn't like is that the nails aren't countersunk and puttied, so there is a small bump in the wood at each nailing. Noticeable if you run your hand over it or if the light strikes it just right.

So. I received my tank today and I will say that the build quality looks very good and I am happy with it.
But I have a question. These tanks are supposed to be starphire front and sides. Well all 4 panes of this tank pass light the same way when looking down thru them. And from a friends tank of similar depth that was custom built starphire 3 sides this glass sure looks a lot more like standard glass than starphire. And I cant tell the difference between the 3 other panes and back which I am able to on the other tank that I have seen... Even the picture it all looks exactly the same to me as it does in person. Any opinions? Last edited by Dino; 04/10/2018 at 05:01 AM. |

I am happy to say I purchased the 80 gal today. Steve made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Really willing to work with you on the price. Exceeded my expectations. Got the Eco Tech package coupled with it and a solid wood (black) stand. Super pumped and cannot wait to get started. Thanks to all of you SCA tank owners for your positive feedback. Highly recommend their products and Steve is the man! BTW, 3 holes are standard with new tanks.

Any different looking from the side? Could it be that looking down and there is no light on the other end that is affecting it?

It all looks the same to me. And doesn't seem near as clear on edge as a similarly sized custom starphire tank that i have seen.

I will have to look at my 150 but with it set up and on the stand it will be difficult to try to light down the glass.
That said I had both a regular glass tank and this sitting next to one another when I got it and there was no comparison. Yes the regular tank had been running and that has an impact but it was similar to HD vs non HD in terms of clarity. I will also note that the black vinyl in the back of the tank will impact the glass color to a degree as that black will radiate through the entire glass to a degree for the side panels.

yeah, my current tank uses the low iron glass and there is a huge difference between that and my previous tank. I could never go back.

After looking at the 3/8 glass i had cut to block off the stock overflows the glass on the sides and front does appear to be more clear when compared side by side. It just looked odd which could be the lighting in the shop. As i said build quality looks really good. There are a couple of tiny chips on corners but thats it. And the silicone job is pretty tidy.

As far as glass quality is concered. Starphire has become a term for any kind of low-iron glass, where as there are number of different glass formulations that are low-iron.
It seems to me that "Edge Color Guide" actually refers to the Opto-clear or Opto-white glass, which have almost no tint at all because all impurities were removed not just iron. The best way I have been told to differentiate between regular glass and starphire is by the tint color of the edge, Starphire glass is supposed to be more blue (like the color of sapphire) where as regular glass is greenish. My SCA 150g edges have a distinctly blue tint. I believe due to the presence of blue tint to the glass, SCA correctly refers to their glass as Starphire (sapphire). If you are looking at the tank under a warm (yellow) light, blue starphire glass would appear more green.

Steve and I were in touch just Tuesday about my purchase. He was responding within a couple hours typically. Odd.

Anyway. Fast reply on his end. Look forward to joining the club . I will probably aim to get a 120g hopefully in March, depending on when I get some tile work finished in my home. |
