Is there are rule of thumb for the number of bristle worms? I'm new to the marine world and got a used tank that came with rock that sat out of the water for some time. After setting up the tank and letting it run for a while, I noticed the worms. I added a piece of shrimp one day, and dozens and dozens of them quickly emerged and attacked it. I was pretty alarmed at the site and my first instinct was to get rid of them. I read more about their beneficial effects and decided to try to keep them. Now I wonder how many I should have. So far I'm going on the advice that if there isn't enough for them to eat they will naturally die off to a level the tank can sustain. Are there dangers in having too many? So far everything seems very happy.

Mmm, let's add that if you have softies, they can be a problem...or at least that there is a species of asterina that is predatory. It would be hard for one of these to transit through a pump to the DT, but it could happen.
Mine occasionally leave a brighter pink track across my coralline. That's all. And there aren't many. |

tentacle critter
https://postimg.org/image/5qeltdegx/
https://postimg.org/image/6lcjkg453/ Can someone ID this critter that is floating around in my sump area with no flow? It has multiple arms/tentacles (+20) that are stretch out an retract. I noticed that it has split into multiple smaller ones since I've taken these photos. I want to ID just incase they are harmful for my tank. Last edited by CANanoReef; 07/21/2016 at 10:50 AM. |

Harmless terebellid worm. Grab it and place it into your tank.

New tank with LR and new to the hobby so no idea what these things are. Already found some aptasia that I removed by just pulling the whole rock. Now I have this. Looks like multiple striped tentacles. Also, what type of plant is that green grass like thing? 8 stranded star shape. Image1469140329.790241.jpg

Aiptasia?
Hello, 2 months into my first saltwater tank. Newly acquired rock is covered in tiny feather dusters. This blue thing popped up today. Should I be worried?

Aiptasia! An invasive anemone that can spread throughout your aquarium and can sting and injure corals. Get it out ASAP. You can do a search here for aiptasia or google it and you'll find tons of info.

What the heck is this?
Hello everybody. Looking for some help. I started my 20 gallon Nano about a year ago. I have not seen any posts or pictures that look like this thing that has shown up recently. Has anybody seen this before? It started appearing from time to time on my live rock, then disappeared for a while and now has shown up on my glass in this long serpentine form.

Pic 1 is of a little type of feather duster, harmless. Wondering if anyone knows how to transplant them to a new, sterile tank.
Pic 2 is of a type of sponge. Wondering of it's a tiny barrel sponge, as it has a siphon looking thing. Also wondering how to transplant this to the new, sterile tank. I'm going to be nuking my old rock, replacing my sand and sanitizing my skimmer and powerheads when I switch out my tank for a drilled one. I can't take the pest anemones any more and figure it's the best time to get rid of them. I'd like to reintroduce some of the harmless stuff like the sponges, dusters and micro brittle-stars but can't think of a way to do it without killing the things while doing so. Any help would be appreciated.
