I was trying to understand the big difference here in this comparison. First I was thinking that the lumenarc III must have been on the system for a long time maybe dirty when you took the lumenarc numbers. Then it dawned on me that 21" off the water is just a long way for a non focused light to travel and still have any intensity. So while these numbers are helpful, if this same test was done with both fixtures say 14" off the surface it sure would complete the comparison, and give us some insight to how we can best chose a reflector for our own system.

That's a good looking Boxer. One of most favorite breeds. O- Reflectors look good too, They will look even better above your tank.

How do you guys think this will work for a 12" high canopy for a 180g tank?
I don't have the option to put it any higher since i cant have reflectors sticking out of the canopy. The wife axed that idea really quick.

I know most people here have their reflectors like 12-14" off the water.
Right now, it's 11" from the top of the inside to the water. With reflector, that's only around 4" clearance. lol

from what i've been reasearching the higher up placing is really optimal since they kind of spotlight light. when you have them that low you will probably have dark areas and areas that are getting an insane amount of light. lumenarc 3's might be a better option if you have to go that low

You would never be happy with them that low. I holes in the top of my canopy on my 180gal. I do however plan on placing some type of cover/crowmolding to hide it this spring. If you can get some pics of you canopy up, I am sure I can come up with a clever way of getting you the room you need. Lumenbrights would be worth it. Otherwise I would agree that Lumenarcs are your best bet at that height, and still being to low for those too IMO.

Those are great. I really wish I had a larger yard I would get another one. My last boxer died of cancer at the age of 5.

Ok im upgrading from my 120g 4x2x2 to a 200g 4x3x2. I will have 2 400w IC Elec on my tank. I wanted to know will 2 full sized ones work good enough for the tank ? Also how high should I hang them ?

4' long x 3' wide? 2' tall? i think you would have some dark areas. unless you raised them up pretty high over your tank.

4' long x 3' tall 2' wide. yes

How high above your tank do you want your lights?

OK, i just cant decide what to do. i currently have a 90 gallon sps with 2 250 xm 20k's in lumenmax III's. I get reallly good coverage obviously. my question is i am setting up a 7'x2'x2' tank but have run into some financial problems so i am going to set it up with just the 2 250's. i want the lumenbrights because i think they are pretty neat and i can sell my lumenmax III's for almost the cost of the lumenbrights. Height is not an issue for me as my canopy will be about 18" but i think i might bet better coverage for the bigger tank with the lumenmax's as long as i have only 2 for a 7' tank. Does this make any sense??? thoughts from lumenbrigh users would be great!
Thanks,

when people are talking height off the water. Is the the distance from the bulb to the water or from the bottom edge of the reflector to the water?

Chris

I have my large LB with the bulb 18" from the water. I think I could lower it, but it seems to work great.

The mini's probably need to go closer

I got my setups from Mike at ReefSpecialty a couple of days ago, finally got the chance to install them, and OH BOY! what a change.
Definately not a good change but a GREAT one! The colors of sticks are much much better.
I went with 3 - 400W dimmable ballasts, the mini LumenBrights reflectors (of course) and the 12K Reeflux bulbs

Thanks a lot Mike!

I'm in the process of leveling the top of the stand that I built for the tank with epoxy. Once that is cured, its cycling time.

Here's a link with more pics of the setup/build if you're interested:
